  • We are looking for a suitably qualified and experienced person to join our Flood Risk Management Department as a Biodiversity Technical Specialist.

With a proven background in the ecology and legislative protection of protected / priority species and habitats, you will help the department to ensure its work is compliant with the relevant environmental legislation.

You will have a strategic overview of our Flood Risk Management Revenue programme in the south of our area (Wear and Tees).

Working with FCRM colleagues and contractors, you will advise on ecological assessment requirements, environmental impacts and mitigation, to deliver this programme.

You will work closely with other biodiversity colleagues to help deliver these projects and provide technical input where required. You will also identify opportunities to enhance the environment and mitigate the impact of our work.

You will advise and help our major capital schemes to ensure our environmental objectives are met, working closely with project teams, contractors and external ecologists.

You will identify and influence opportunities to deliver multiple benefits, Natural Flood Management and working with natural processes, through flood risk management planning/delivery, and ensure that all our work complies with our legal environmental requirements.

You will work closely with our Fisheries, Biodiversity and Geomorphology Teams who also help our programmes, as well as the other Biodiversity Advisor to deliver for your catchment and projects.

You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident

The team- The FCRM departments are accountable for ensuring FCRM assets (flood walls, earth embankments, dams etc.) are constructed, inspected, surveyed, maintained and operated in a safe, effective manner to reduce flood risk to people and property to agreed service levels and standards.

During a flood event, the team operates its assets to deliver the Environment Agency's operational response with our partners. The team engage the public in relation to the maintenance and performance of our assets.

  • Experience/skills required
  • You'll be an experienced ecologist / biodiversity specialist, with a thorough understanding and working knowledge on relevant environmental legislation, ecological survey and assessment.
You'll be educated to degree level in a relevant discipline or have relevant professional experience.

You'll also have excellent communication skills and be able to build and sustain relationships and experience of working with a range of customers, both internally and externally.

Your excellent customer service, communications and interpersonal abilities will be complemented by your enthusiasm and ambition to achieve defined deadlines and targets.
