Working with the SENFO to ensure all case work is in line with legislative requirements and Environment Agency guidelines, and to manage case-file content and disclosure schedules.


  • The daytoday role will include:
  • Giving advice to investigating officers to ensure timely progression of criminal cases and report to the area governance group regarding the progression of investigations.
  • Ensuring evidence and documents relevant to case investigations adheres to best practice and is in compliance with the Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act 1996 and related legislation and guidance.
  • Collating and record material gathered by investigating officers and provide guidance in use of best practice where appropriate.
  • Prepare cases and disclosure schedules for the legal team and assess in line with current guidelines and legislative requirements.
  • Advising investigating officers when witness summonses are required, secure and manage third party material and liaise with the legal team throughout. Attend court as required.
  • Liaise with team leaders and senior investigators to ensure the integrity of all original material connected with the investigation as it progresses through the court process.
  • Liaise with Area triage officer to ensure all material is stored in line with Environment Agency retention schedules.
  • Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.
The team

  • You will coordinate criminal cases for investigations undertaken by Environment Agency officers. You will be part of a team that investigates serious offending and organised crime associated with waste and waterbased criminality. The team have active involvement with other law enforcement bodies, carry out cross border complex investigations (Area/National boundaries), dealing with serious crimes that causes detrimental impact on the environment and undercut legitimate business by their criminal activity.
Experience/skills required

  • Experience in working as part of a team involved in complex criminal investigations. You will need to demonstrate excellent organisational skills in collating and recording documents and evidence collected as part of investigations and presenting this material for use in prosecutions.
  • Good working knowledge of the Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act 1996 (CPIA), Codes of Practice associated with the act, Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984, an understanding of the latest Criminal Procedure Rules and of Environment Agency enforcement and prosecution policy.
  • Working knowledge of criminal court procedures. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • You will be able to demonstrate a proven ability to a manage and extensive and complex workload with a minimum of supervision.
