    The Band 6 role is to demonstrate the UHB's values caring for each other, working together, always improving.

    The Band 6 is responsible supporting the Band 7 for the efficient management of the clinical area and provide visible, professional nursing leadership, support, supervision and guidance in line with NMC standards and code for practice to include leading and developing the core nursing establishment in the delivery of compassionate, high quality, effective, patient-centred nursing care, and providing fair, honest and measured people management.

    Utilise resources effectively ensuring the planned nurse staffing levels are rostered and all reasonable steps are taken to maintain them for the clinical area over the 24 hour period.

    Promote multidisciplinary working, with outcomes aimed at achieving the best interests of patients through consistent service delivery.

    Main duties of the job

    Assist the Band 7 in maintaining and monitoring the standard and quality of care delivered in the clinical area and respectfully challenge poor practices as appropriate. Escalate quality concerns to the Band 7 and taking immediate actions, as appropriate.

    Provide open and honest feedback to the team on standards of nursing care provided to, and experienced by, patients and service and communicate and implement agreed improvement actions and learning in a timely fashion.

    Assist in addressing with patient and relative concerns, complaints and incident reports openly and honestly in line with policy, assist in undertaking initial/full investigations and ensuring immediate action plans are initiated as required in order to safely deal with situations arising.

    Assist in the investigation of clinical incidents, complaints, DATIX and support any serious incidents using root cause analysis procedures. Ensure action plans and findings are fully applied in a timely manner and recommendations are incorporated into practice.

    Develop and maintain good interpersonal relationships with the clinical specialists from across nursing and the wider multi-disciplinary team, VANS, Social workers, PT, OT, PD, Transplant team, working in partnership to meet the patient needs and achieve nationally-agreed standards.

    Detailed job description and main responsibilities

    Demonstrate an understanding of the clinical area resource costs and adopt a cost mindful approach to the utilisation of such resources, recognising and taking forward areas for cost reduction.

    Manage and ensure the well-being of staff through effective appraisal, roster management recruitment and selection, fair and compassionate staff management, in line with all SBUHB workforce policies, and the supervision of supernumerary staff.

    Work and communicate effectively as a member of the junior clinical and nursing leadership team for the organisation, collaborating with the Band 7 and also with Renal Matron to Promote equality and diversity.
