- Bachelor of Dental Surgery or equivalent
- Postgraduate qualification MJDF, MFDS, FDS, MDent Surg or willingness to complete in a specified time scale

Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen to work in the Head & NeckDirectorate. The successful applicant will work between the sites of SunderlandRoyal Hospital, South Tyneside Hospital, Durham Treatment Centre, ShotleyBridge Hospital and Primary Care facilities.
You will work as part of a team with the existing 8 Consultants andother staff within the department. The successful applicant will be required towork flexibly within this team structure and participate in a 1:6 2ndon call rota.
You must have full registration with the General Dental Council and bein possession of Bachelor of Dental Surgery, or equivalent and preferably apostgraduate qualification FDS, MFDS, MJDF. In addition, you will beexpected to have experience at SHO or DCT level in Oral & MaxillofacialSurgery and be competent in Minor Oral Surgery.

Main duties of the job
In theOral and Maxillo-facial Unit in the Sunderland Royal Hospitala large number of day case surgery procedures are undertaken in the department.A specific oral and maxillofacial operating theatre is available. Duties may also include operating andclinical sessions in Shotley Bridge General Hospital, University Hospital ofNorth Durham and South Tyneside General Hospital and primary care outreachfacilities. It is hoped that thesuccessful applicant will develop a special interest.
TheTrust has close ties to Newcastle and Sunderland Universities.
Theappointee will work under the supervision of Consultant colleagues and dutieswill include in-patients and out-patient work, day-case surgery, audit and teaching. The appointee will take part in supervisionand training of junior staff and may be called upon to contribute to trainingof students and nursing staff. Inpatientconsultations will be provided as required.
Thispost is up to a maximum of 12 sessions inclusive of 2nd on call on a1:6 rota with Speciality Registrars and other Speciality Doctors.

This isa Specialty Surgeon Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon post, whole time/part time,based at Sunderland Royal Hospitaland is a replacement post. Sunderland is designated as a sub-regional centre fororal and maxillofacial surgery serving a population of 900,000.
The Oraland Maxillofacial is accommodated in modern premises and the Unit provides acomprehensive service for medical and surgical problems involving the mouth,jaws, face, neck and supporting structures.
Itprovides a service for maxillofacial trauma, head and neck oncology and itsreconstruction, facial deformity, temporomandibular joint surgery, implantologydentoalveolar surgery. The Unit has anactive interest in undergraduate and postgraduate education and is involved inclinical research. Particular interesthas been taken in appointing, encouraging and supporting committed andmotivated junior staff. Good links andexchanges of trainees from other countries have been developed.
Atpresent this service is provided from Sunderland Royal Hospital and outsideSunderland, from South Tyneside General Hospital, Durham Treatment Centre, ShotleyBridge General Hospital and primary care facilities. The successful applicantmay be required to carry out some sessions at premises owned and operated bythe Primary Care providers.
The Unit works in close co-operation with its other medicaland dental colleagues, in particular Radiotherapy, Dermatology, ENT, GeneralSurgery, Ophthalmology, Neurosurgery, Orthopaedics, Accident & Emergency,Orthodontics, Restorative Dentistry, Prosthodontics and our community medicaland dental colleagues.
Thereare regular head and neck clinics, joint orthognathic clinics and jointdermatology clinics.
