Salary:
£64,170 to £70,690 plus a Location allowance of £1,721. You will receive £64,170 the band minimum. Progress to the band maximum of £70,690 will be via incremental progression.

Background to the Role


The Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) Commercial Function are responsible for delivering end-to-end commercial lifecycle management and supporting the wider business in working with third parties.


The Metropolitan Police Service spends just over £840m each year on a diverse range of goods and services, from ammunition to complex IT service contracts, from response vehicles to stationery.

We proactively manage thirty large complex and operationally critical outsourced service contracts, to ensure that we receive the quality services we are paying for and achieve value for money through the entire life of the contract.

This is an exciting time to be working in commercial management for the MPS.

The MPS Commercial Function are in the middle of a large-scale transformation, working to deliver the following strategic aims:

As a member of the Commercial Services team, you will be directly supporting the MPS mission to make life safer for over 9 million Londoners.

Role Description


This role sits in the Property pillar and is specifically focussed on providing commercial support to stakeholders responsible for all elements of hard and soft FM, utilities, operational services and catering.

The MPS has over 200 sites across 32 London boroughs.


You will be contributing to delivering Commercial Excellence for the Met, providing a customer focused service, understanding the business need and stakeholder drivers, with the aim of becoming a trusted commercial advisor.


You will provide commercial support from developing the category strategy to leading on sourcing strategies and events, and support the stakeholder contract management functions within the business.


There is a rolling programme of procurements with a focus of the role to secure value through effective sourcing of suppliers and where possible identify collaboration opportunities with the wider Greater London Authority (GLA) group.

The sense of team within the category is strong, and relationships with the client function are excellent.

You will be expected to work autonomously to ensure effective stakeholder management and work within the commercial and wider MPS governance framework processes and procedures.

You will drive performance management, risk management, issues resolution, financial management oversight, contract change control and overall contract and statutory compliance whilst being responsible for continuous improvement across the commercial activities (service and value).


You will also work closely with colleagues within the commercial function to contribute and feed into the category strategies and offer insight and best practice across the wider team.

You will also develop relationships with the MPS stakeholders to drive value for money and risk management excellence across the category.


This role will be based at Kilburn police station with a requirement to be with stakeholders at Sidcup from time to time, working across the Met estate with a blended working option.


Key Responsibilities
What does the average day look like? Your core duties will include (but are not limited to):

Ensuring effective Commercial Management within the category:

  • Providing the highest level of commercial advice and supporting team members to deliver the best outcomes for the business
  • Delivering best in class business cases for approval
  • Managing contract variations, providing practical advice and strategic direction. Identifying where changes in the contract are required and adopts strategies to implement these
  • Driving innovation and improvement in contracts
  • Advising on risk and reward mechanisms in contracts and key performance indicators
  • Monitoring progress against the business objectives and works with internal stakeholders to develop improvements through the supply chain
  • Actively managing strategic relationships to deliver mutual benefit for those involved
  • At a delivery level, holding both suppliers and customers accountable for living up to their contractual commitments. Assisting with resolving disputes effectively and efficiently
  • Performing contract exit activity, from preemptive action to transactional, process
