    Job summary

    An exciting opportunity has arisen within our new, state of the art, Urology Centre for a Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse.

    We are looking for an individual that would enjoy working in an exciting and challenging environment, who has excellent interpersonal and organisational skills along with the aptitude for working independently when required.

    Previous experience within a Urology environment would be an advantage, although opportunities for personal and professional development within the role are available.

    The successful applicant will be a proactive team member who can demonstrate an ability to effectively contribute and manage; in collaboration with the Nurse Manager, Lead Urology Nurse and members of the Urology MDT; the smooth effective operation of the Centre.

    Main duties of the job

    The post holder will assist in delivering a service which meets target standards and promotes a creative and innovative approach to on-going service development, including the mentoring and management of junior staff, and driving forward Achieving Excellence within the department.

    On a daily basis the post holder will act as a manager and coordinator for any of the areas within Urology Centre, and the activity across the Urology team. The role involves leadership to a named group of nurses and participation in the collaborative management of the Urology Centre.

    The post holder will be a resource nurse for the area and will act as a link in promoting an integrated specialist service. The post holder will develop elements of nurse led practice within the Urology Centre

    Job responsibilities

    Liaise with colleagues and members of other disciplines to ensure good communication and effective exchange of clinical information both within and outside the department.

    Ensure effective communication and interpersonal skills with other members of the team. Promote a friendly and welcome atmosphere for both team members and patients. Be courteous, helpful and supportive to patients and staff at all times maintaining the values and behaviours ethos within the Trust.

    Actively promote health education by displaying and updating literature and information relevant to patients specific problems for patients and relatives.

    Manage and develop an Urology Centre service which supports all clinical staff and consultant teams. Collate all the necessary data, record management plans and communicate plans effectively with all clinical and administration staff.

    Assist in ensuring that appropriate performance, management and staff development is on-going. Ensure accurate staff records are kept securely, maintaining confidentiality at all times. To also assist in the management of personal issues as appropriate.

    Actively participate with the multidisciplinary team in the development of protocols and standards to direct patient care.

    Ensure appropriate staff deployment to match workload of the clinics/treatments and provide supervision for students. Plan and compile duty rotas to ensure appropriate use of nursing resource.

    Co-ordinate the management of the Urology Centre clinics and treatments/procedures on a day-to-day basis, ensuring effective service delivery to quality standards.

    In conjunction with the manager, manage the service needs and the standards of the Centre.

    To introduce new ideas and methods of nursing care (research), carry out clinical audit and act on the information obtained.

    To ensure that the highest possible quality of service is delivered within the Urology Centre, maintaining a high standard of nursing care in accordance with current policies and procedures to facilitate an effective process for the patients.

    To ensure that all necessary material resources are available for the day to day running of the Centre and allocate as appropriate.

    To be patients advocate and provide support for patients medical, social and psychological needs whilst attending the Urology Centre.

    To maintain good nursing practice whilst responding to the changing needs and circumstances within the service. Encourage and develop new evidence based approaches to practice and act as a change agent.

    Undertake link roles as identified in discussion with the Urology Centre Matron to ensure collaboration and integration with specialist services and departments internally within the Trust and with external partners

    Managerial

    To actively lead, drive and engage staff to drive change and improvement across outpatients as part of Achieving Excellence and transformation programmes

  • To be aware of the Urology Centre nursing budget in order to achieve a safe and cost effective service within the constraints of the agreed budget, highlighting any areas of potential cost improvement schemes to the Urology Centre Nurse Manager.
  • To assist in the formulation of policies and protocols and to set standards of performance for patient care in outpatients.
  • Introduce staff to the department and ensure they are familiar with Trust policies and procedures, which must be accessible to all staff including junior doctors and locum staff regarding policies and protocols to ensure efficient clinic procedure.
  • Attendance of management meetings to ensure a quality service is maintained and future developments implemented.
  • Exercise leadership by example and always act in a professional manner to both patients and relatives.
  • Liaise with secretaries and receptionists to ensure smooth running of the Urology Centre as part of a team.
  • Undertake the responsibility for the control of clinics/treatments, including the early identification of problems and liaison with the medical staff, medical records department and secretaries to ensure the necessary action is taken and evaluated.
  • To ensure that all Trust policies and procedures are maintained by all staff in the clinical area. To provide a written record of any untoward incident or complaints in accordance with Trust policies to ensure good customer surveys.
  • Participate in meeting government activity targets.
  • Actively participate in the implementation of Clinical Governance.
  • Assist the departmental risk assessment, COSHH and other health & safety issues and ensure safe practice with regard to manual handling, sharps, infection control etc.
  • Manage staff resources, taking into account skill mix. Arrange off-duty accordingly.
  • Have responsibility for the organisation and running of the clinics/treatments, which include the management and development of nursing staff working within the Urology Centre, of innovative nursing practices and quality initiatives.
  • To assist in the development and implementation of systems that will ensure the smooth running of the clinics to minimise problems associated with waiting times and DNSs etc.
  • Implement individual performance review.
  • To participate in any other duties that you may be asked to undertake.
  • Collate comments and complaints within the Urology Centre and work with the Nurse Manager and to formulate plans to address and publicise identified issues.
  • Teaching, Training and Research

  • To participate in teaching students and be mentor and facilitator for placements, completing assessment forms in close conjunction with the European Institute of Health & Medical Science to ensure the training needs of all learners are met.
  • To advise patients on promotion of health and prevention of illnesses and accidents supporting their cares and worries with knowledge based information.
  • To act as a mentor for new staff and assist in the training and induction of new staff to the area.
  • To participate in the teaching and education of staff within the Urology Centre, to perform designated procedures and ensure a high standard of care.
  • To remain professionally updated and be aware of current research findings that may affect practice.
  • Develop nursing practice in the department and manage change.
  • Maintain an educational environment that is conductive to the learning of all staff.
  • Attend relevant study days as nominated and provide feedback.
  • To continue to develop clinical and professional knowledge and be aware of your own training needs. Attend professional updates and mandatory training as dictated by the Trust and the NMC.
  • Maintain and develop ones own professional knowledge and expertise and meet Revalidation requirements, and to maintain clinical credibility.
  • Support and undertake confirmer responsibilities to enable staff to undertake nurse revalidation.

    Essential

  • Registered Nurse
  • Has a professional Knowledge acquired through degree of diploma
  • Desirable

  • ENB 998 or Certificate in Education.
  • Knowledge and Experience

    Essential

  • Demonstrable experience in Post Anaesthetic Care, HDU or Critical Care Experience
  • Can demonstrate up-to-date clinical credibility / competence
  • Will be able to show experience at band 5 or above
  • Desirable

  • Can demonstrate experiential learning from experience in outpatients or related area to Urology, and has preceptor experience to qualified staff
  • Clinical supervision experience
  • Experience of audit/research
