- To manage all aspects of the team including the quality and on time delivery of results for samples received within the department.
- To provide staff with technical assistance and training in order to comply with internal and external procedures and systems.
- To deal with routine staffing issues in support of the Laboratory Manager to ensure customer service levels are maintained.
- To deal directly with customer and result queries.
- To support/deputize for the Microbiology Laboratory Manager as and when required in her/his absence to ensure continuity of service levels and quality at all times.
- Ensure a shift handover is performed at the start and end of every shift, with key issues clearly identified and prioritized.
- Review outstanding work with respect to customer deadlines and prioritize activities of the team.
- Over period of shift, regularly review workload with respect to analytical test deadlines and use this information to prioritize activities of the team.
- To organize and assistance in the sample preparation laboratory when needed to meet business requirements.
- Identify and investigate causes of performance variation to ensure continuity of service levels and quality at all times.
- To perform technical and analytical procedures with due regard for written procedures, maintaining adequate records and producing accurate quality results on time.
- Ensure that Training Records /Training Matrices are kept up to date in order to comply with
- internal and external procedures and systems allowing easy identification of skill gaps.
- To supervise and organise the training of junior/new staff in working methods and techniques.
- To maintain an up-to-date knowledge of test methods and new developments specific to the work environment.
- Practical microbiology laboratory experience along with experience in training and quality systems.
- A Levels Science/Mathematics/English grades A to C, or equivalent or experience in an microbiology laboratory.
- Experience in a service industry related to the food industry
- Able to adopt a flexible approach to work and react effectively to a rapidly changing environment.
- Working knowledge of effective people management techniques, performance management, disciplinaries.
- First degree or equivalent - BSc/HNC.
- Relevant supervisory qualification/training ILM, etc
- Experience of working within budgetary guidelines and ensuring effective cost control mechanisms appropriate to the needs of the business.
- Experience of directly communicating with clients and successfully resolving clients issues/complaints.
