    Would you like to help shape the future of human microbiome sciences? We have an exciting opportunity for a Discovery Microbiology Lead, who is passionate about the human microbiome and translational science, to join the team led by Dr Trevor Lawley.

    About the Role:

    This is an exciting opportunity and a key position in the Host-Microbiota Interactions Lab (HMIL). The team focuses on gut bacteria and viruses and their influence in long-term growth, development and disease resistance of children from Westernised and Low- and Middle-Income countries. The Discovery Microbiology Lead will provide scientific leadership and technical expertise to establish early discovery activities for clinical grade probiotics and high throughput bacterial phenotypic screening. The primary objective is to grow and mentor a multi-disciplinary team to deliver experimental capabilities focused on the successful delivery of the probiotic studies.

    About You:

    We seek someone with a strong background in discovery microbiology and industry to shape and implement the experimental strategy for the Lawley lab, including growing and developing the experimental multi-disciplinary wet lab team and managing and supervising diverse internal resources. The successful candidate will have experience of facilitating impactful collaborations with both academic institutions and industry leaders, communicating outputs to the stakeholders and representing the programme at international scientific meetings. Furthermore, experience of working with external industry partners to manage complex, dynamic, and highly regulated path to developing a clinical grade probiotic from an academic setting, and overseeing the transfer of data, protocols and related know-how to industry partner with ambitious timelines.

    The Team

    This is an exciting opportunity for you to join a dynamic team investigating the role of the microbiota in childhood development and disease resistance using clinical samples, genomics, anaerobic microbiology and host-interaction models. There is an entrepreneurial spirit to the lab and a strong translational focus with the goal of developing novel, microbiome-based diagnostics and therapeutics.

    You will be part of a dynamic, multidisciplinary, collaborative team that incorporates microbiology and bioinformatics approaches and will be expected to work closely with existing team members and collaborators to accomplish scientific objectives and proactively identify, establish and develop new collaborations and drive publications.

    Essential Skills:
    • A PhD in anaerobic microbiology, genomics, biotechnology or equivalent discipline
    • Experience of leading and building teams in academia and industry
    • Knowledge of drug discovery process for human microbiome
    • A track record of productivity in academia and industry
    • Experience using high throughput anaerobic microbiology
    • Experience performing high-throughput screens
    • Experiencing creating industry-grade standard operating procedures and writing risk assessments
    • Line Management/Supervisory Experience
    • Ability to understand and manage academic and commercial drivers

    • Exceptional communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team with scientific and non-scientific backgrounds.
