Description
As Assistant Gardener, you'll be working with a team to deliver the day-to-day care of the garden and maintain high presentation standards. This role will include a range of practical tasks to develop, improve and look after the garden and contribute to the delivery of projects.

**Hours**:22.5 hours per week

**Contract**:This is a fixed term contract due to end when the previous employee returns from maternity leave. At this point we cannot confirm exactly how long this contract will last, but it is unlikely to be more than 8 months.

What it's like to work here:In this role, you'll report to the Senior Gardener. The Gardens team is split into 4 areas - for this role you'll be working in the West team. You'll help develop and maintain both formal and informal garden areas, including the herbaceous borders, Mediterranean garden, exotic garden, rose garden, Paved Court, Pompeian garden and West Garden. You'll also be supporting the wider gardens team as needed.

What you'll be doing:Daily responsibilities will include assisting with shrub and herbaceous border maintenance - including planting, digging and weeding - alongside watering, mowing and mulching. During the winter, you'll mainly be supporting the team with hedgecutting. You'll work alongside gardeners and a team of volunteers - and help the gardens team manage our volunteers. You'll be happy engaging with the public, answering a variety of garden-related questions and talking about what you are doing with pride. We're looking for someone who enjoys working outside, with a practical approach to work, getting the day-to-daywork done and a passion for plants. The role can often be physically challenging, and we use a wide range of machinery and equipment to help us get our work done. The use of machinery such as tractors, hedge trimmers and pedestrian mowers is essential, but training will be provided.
