    0-19 Specialist Infant Feeding Community Public Health Practitioner HV NHS AfC: Band 6 Job overview

    An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the 0-19 Service at Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust as a 0-19 Specialist Infant Feeding (SCPHN) Health Visitor.

    The post holder will be compassionate, accountable individual who treats all colleagues, patients and service users with respect and seeks to deliver excellence in their role.     The practitioner will work in the 0-19 Service with The Infant Feeding Team. The Practitioner will deliver the 0-19 evidence-based interventions around Infant feeding for families within Sheffield.

    The practitioner will be based within aLocality Health Visiting Team, supervised by the 0-19 Specialist Infant Feeding and Nutrition Health Visitor Lead.

    The Post Holder will work with infants and their families and act as a resource to support the 0-19 practitioners to promote and participate in ensuring the UNICEF Baby Friendly Standards which are embedded in routine practice and maintained in this Trust under the guidance of the Infant Feeding Specialist Lead/Coordinator and respect women's choice of feeding method and encourage close and loving relationships.

    The post holder will be expected to hold a driving licence and have access to a car to implement interventions within the family home visiting families throughout the city of Sheffield.

    Main duties of the job

    To Support the Specialist Infant Feeding & Nutrition lead to train and support the staff in the implementation, achievement and maintenance of the UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative best practice standards.

    To provide high quality Infant Feeding services and care for pregnant and post -natal women and their families on behalf of Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust and the SCH Community care Group, and in collaboration with NFT SCH.

    To Support the Specialist Infant Feeding & Nutrition lead to work towards increasing breastfeeding rates in Sheffield, in line with the public health agenda to improve health and reduce inequalities.

    Detailed job description and main responsibilities

    To be the lead professional where there are complex infant feeding issues.

    To assess babies with suspected tongue tie and refer to hospital appropriately.

    To work with families in a variety of settings including home visits, providing evidence based advice and support.

    To develop and deliver an agreed programme of care by a continuous cycle of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation.

    To deliver an equitable service to all families. Where there are barriers to communication, enlist appropriate support to address both language and literary issues.

    To actively participate in, and facilitate health promotion programmes and provide both formal and informal teaching e.g., breastfeeding, parenting, immunisation, smoking cessation etc.

    To work with families where children are identified as being vulnerable or in need of extra support e.g., parenting issues, behaviour problems, family breakdown, substance abuse, domestic violence.

    To liaise effectively with other members of the multi-agency, multi-disciplinary teams to ensure cohesive planning of care for individuals. families and communities.

    To provide a Targeted/Specialist High Impact care to vulnerable groups, families and individuals in a population and within available resources.

    To work across the city supporting mothers and babies with complex feeding issues workingwithallocatedhealthvisitingteamsandreferringon(e.g.Tonguetieclinic)appropriately.

    Deliver Baby Friendly training to new staff in collaboration with Midwives, Local Authority and Sheffield Children's hospital acute Trust.

    To deliver annual BFI update training for all 0-19 staff

    Support the infant feeding and nutrition lead to undertake regular BFI audits of staff and mothers.

    To attend citywide and regional Infant Feeding meetings and any other appropriate meetings to support/ cover for Infant Feeding Lead.

    To participate in own appraisal and compilation of a Personal Development Plan which will provide evidence of continued professional development/ training.

    To provide and undertake an annual appraisal/ development review for the staff you manage. (Skill Mix Staff who are part of the 0-19 team).

    To prescribe medicines when appropriate using the Nurse Prescribing Formulary.

    Participate in regular and thorough assessment of risks, and effective management action to avoid or reduce risks to self and those staff, activities and workplaces for which the post-holder is responsible and accountable.

    Qualifications and Training

    • Degree in Health Visiting

    • Current, active NMC registration
    • Nurse Prescribing Certificate
    • Two day BFI Infant Feeding and Relationship Training.
    • Completion of Mentoring Training
    • Teaching or Health Promotion Qualification
    • Leadership Training (e.g. LEO)
    • Completed a variety of BFI Training Courses
