Revenue Assistant Officer (Council Tax)

Grade 4, £25,611 to £27,508 (inclusive of local weighting), full time, 37 hours per week, permanent. Based in Wallfields, Hertford.

An opportunity for a Revenues Assistant Officer (Council Tax) has become available to work at Hertford as part of the Council Tax team.

This motivated and highly professional team is looking for an individual committed to excellence in their work and with a passion for customer service and getting it right first time.

If successful you will assist by supporting all day-to-day activities necessary for the efficient and effective collection of Council Tax.


Some of the key responsibilities include:

  • To identify and process the correct liability for each property, checking and issuing appropriate bills, forms and notices
  • To set up Direct Debit arrangements, amendments, cancellations, special payment arrangements and action refunds as appropriate
  • To identify accounts requiring recovery action and to take such action as appropriate in the case of nonpayment
  • To decide and implement suitable action after a Liability Order has been granted, up to and including referring appropriate case to enforcement agents
  • To keep and maintain appropriate records and statistics, review exception reports and ensure appropriate action is taken
  • To provide a customer interface with members of the public or their representatives, in writing
  • To carry out duties to support the work of the shared service managers including a range of administrative and clerical tasks
  • To provide administrative support to remote and home workers

  • Numeracy skills, including the ability to manipulate numerical data
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a strong customer focus
  • Experience in a similar environment
  • Ability and willingness to help support and provide guidance, support and advice to less experienced staff
  • Knowledge of Windows based office package
  • Be able to work as part of a team, willing to assist others, but also take responsibility for own work as required
  • Ability to prioritise and work accurately to targets and deadlines
  • Good word processing and IT skills, including an ability to use an online computer system to interrogate and update data
  • Selfmotivated, enthusiastic, and be able to deal with a heavy and varied workload
  • Be able to deal with difficult situations
  • Ability to maintain concentration in a busy environment
  • Work methodically, accurately and thoroughly, paying close attention to detail
  • Ability to remain calm and focussed under pressure
  • Ability to prioritise and work accurately to targets and deadlines
  • Ability to learn, all legislation and guidance appropriate to the post
