Introduction


The Production Engineer defines and works out how the product will be manufactured and/or assembled on the production line including decision of packaging used.

They ensure the right quantity of components/products are delivered and aligned to support the speed of the production line.

The Production Engineer is responsible for implementation of production processes and procedures, leading production and productivityimprovements with project based activities, including new product introduction (NPI) and manufacturing layouts (cell design) to reduce waste, improve product quality, build safety into process and reduce operating costs.


Requirements of the Role

  • Introduce new products into Production ensuring that the customer specifications are met.
  • Support and work to an implementation plan for engineering activities.
  • To generate manufacturing instructions (MI's) for all stages of build, thus reducing variability in manufacturing
  • Implementation of customer engineering change notes (ECN's) throughout all stages
  • Design processes that meet the product / customer requirements & have input during DFM/DFX phase of NPI
  • Liaise with in house or 3rd party tooling suppliers, agree design, costs and lead times, to achieve the production start date.
  • Incorporate best manufacturing practices, when developing the process incorporating LEAN principles of manufacturing (5S)
  • Introduce new processes and equipment required to manufacture products to a required level of output.
  • Monitor yields and improve processes, using continuous improvement tools, individually and as part of a team.
  • Provide support to production to help solve problems, in the manufacturing process to include training of new processes
  • Assist in planned preventative maintenance on various production processes
  • To maintain various tools, fixtures and small machines
  • To support customer visits, meetings, audits and generate reports.
  • Meeting health & safety requirements with active participation in hazard spotting activity
  • Ensure compliance with company codes of conduct.
  • Keep up with current and developing engineering trends for example automation of build
  • Carry out PFMEAs, (Production Failure Mode Effects Analysis) to assist quality in their documentation
  • Support and lead process improvement activities
  • Undertake continuous training and development
  • Perform root cause analysis and resolve problems

Qualifications/Skills/Personal Qualities - CORE

  • Understanding of GMS products
  • Good communication skills
  • Strong IT skills within Excel, Word & ability to learn company specific systems
  • Suitable Engineering qualification such as HND or equivalent
  • Have a professional and accurate approach to work
  • Disciplined, responsible and enthusiastic
  • Experience of working within an engineering environment
  • Team player with 'can do' attitude supporting the needs of the department and business.
  • Ability to provide logical & thorough instructions in a written format that others can follow

Qualifications/Skills/Personal Qualities Desireable

  • Relevant manufacturing/engineering qualification preferred
  • Professional accreditation with an industry related body would be advantageous
  • Ability to use CAD would be advantageous
  • Ability to design/ develop processes and layouts for production.
  • Experience of FMEA (Failure Mode Effects Analysis), Kaizen/A3 (continuous improvement and problem solving) process improvement and Poke Yoke (error proofing) techniques
  • Significant work experience in a Low volume/ High change manufacturing environment
  • Experienced with MRP systems
  • Understanding of design and production costs to include waste, downtime, scrap and rework
