We are currently looking for a talented and motivated
Principal Engineer to join our Flooding and Water Management Team based in Leeds.


You will join a growing team of civil engineers, modellers and hydrologists who undertake engineering and hydraulic modelling in areas of infrastructure, flood risk management, surface water management, SUDs and integrated catchment studies.

**What does the role involve?

Your role will be to lead the delivery of a wide variety of projects for several key clients both in the UK and Europe.

The work will cover a range of activities including project feasibility studies, outline design, hydraulic model build and verification, hydrological assessments, design support, construction support, asset management and development impact assessments.

Your role will play a significant part in the development of others in the team.

Key duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Acting as a project manager/technical leader for the delivery of water environment projects as a water discipline lead within multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Working within agreed deliverables, key milestones, project methodology, quality assurance and control strategy.
  • Undertaking project delivery tasks as defined by the Project Manager/Team Leader, which may include calculations, drawings, sketches and reports etc, as well as site investigations.
  • Inputting into project bidding and tenders including identifying opportunities.
  • Being aware of project needs and taking personal responsibility to work to deliver the agreed time, cost and quality requirements, taking guidance as required.
  • Assessing, documenting and communicating design changes to the Project Manager/Team Leader.
  • Ensuring that all work is carried out in full compliance with the Company's Integrated Management Systems (IMS).
  • Providing technical guidance, support and training to colleagues.
  • Managing team software and hardware requirements.
  • Working in close collaboration with, and supporting colleagues from other disciplines as required.
  • Recommending/implementing improvements to technical policy, processes and design solutions where applicable, and sharing via knowledge management channels as appropriate.

To be successful in this role you'll possess:

  • Knowledge of UK and European legislation governing the technical discipline including planning policy and relevant design standards.
  • An excellent technical understanding of UK hydrology and open channel hydraulics this is essential as the role will be expected to mentor team members less experienced in this field as well as sign off assessments.
  • Experience of GIS (e.g. ArcGIS) and hydraulic\hydrology modelling software (namely FEH, WINFAP, Flood Modeller\TUFLOW) this is essential as the role will be expected to mentor team members less experienced in this field.
  • Experience in some or all of the following: flood estimation methods, undertaking environmental impact assessments, drainage and SUDs design, river engineering and water resource assessment.
  • Experience of managing projects and acting as technical discipline lead on multidisciplinary projects.
  • The ability to communicate in a fluent and positive manner with other team members and to produce reports in plain English.
  • Good problem solving/contingency planning skills with ability to find quick, innovative and practical solutions
  • Effective negotiation and persuading skills, able to manage and diffuse challenging situations.
  • Chartered with a professional body such as CIWEM.
