Description

Interviews to be held on Friday 16 December*An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 3 Smoking Cessation Administrator to work within the Respiratory department here at West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

In 2019, the Government pledged to make England 'smokefree', defined as smoking rates of 5% or less, and gave the tobacco industry an ultimatum to make smoking obsolete by 2030.

The NHS Long Term Plan sets out the commitment that by 2023 to 2024, all people admitted to an acute hospital who smoke will be offered NHS funded tobacco dependency treatment

In response to this pledge West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (WHTH) has set up a Tobacco Dependency Service, whose role is to deliver stop smoking support during and after the hospital stay and refer the patient into community stop smoking support when they are discharged.

All patients admitted to WHTH should have their smoking status recorded and their smoking habits documented in line with the public health agenda.

The post holder will assist clinical teams in providing smoking cessation support to help smokers who want to stop smoking and undertake administrative duties that support the Trust in meeting the National Guidance:

  • Establishing and maintain communication with patients, relatives and carers, working in partnership with the multidisciplinary team to provide holistic patient care
  • Undertake routine assessment tasks related to individuals' health and wellbeing, making modifications within prescribed parameters and reporting back to Senior Staff on patients' progress
  • Assist in delivering programmes of care to meet individuals' health and wellbeing needs, promoting patient independence as appropriate, in partnership with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to work flexibly and unsociable hours to meet the demands of the service
  • Identify and support ward smoke free champions to promote the smoke free message through their daytoday work.
  • Raise the profile of smoking cessation across West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

There has never been a more exciting time to join West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Major redevelopment works are due for completion by 2025 or soon after.

These will be most dramatic at Watford General Hospital where up to 90% of buildings will be new.

The trust has recently gained 'teaching hospital' status which reflects the dedicated work of many teams and individuals who have set the standard for delivering high quality training, learning and education at all levels of the workforce.

We encourage and welcome people with disabilities. If you need help, please ask.

The duties and responsibilities outlined although comprehensive are not definitive and you may be required to perform other reasonable duties at the request of your Line Manager.

The post holder will have a broad range of skills that will enable them to fulfil the role. These include communication with patients/carers and obtaining agreement from them before commencing any tasks. Promoting a smoke free hospital and championing the project as part of the team are also key.

Analysis and judgement such as recording data accurately, updating patient records, policy and service development such as interacting with others to achieve the objectives or purpose of the post, along with contributing ideas for service improvement are essential for this new post to help shape the project going forward.

You will work closely with the Clinical Teams at WHTH as well as, Community Healthcare Providers, the Hertfordshire & West Essex Integrated Care System (ICS), and Patients and Carers.
