We are recruiting for a (10 PA) Locum Consultant in Trauma & Orthopaedics with a special interest in Hand and Wrist Surgery.


The successful applicant will support the current delivery of Trauma and Orthopaedic Upper Limb Service, including contribution to the development of these services at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust.


The appointee will join the existing team to provide specialist care to this growing population of patients, and raise departmental profiles through teaching and education.


The aim of the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust, Orthopaedic Department is to become a leader in the field of Orthopaedic management and the successful applicant must therefore have the pre-requisite procedural and leadership skills as well as team work, drive and ambition to succeed in achieving these goals.


The successful applicant will be expected to share with the present staff, the large clinical load referred from a range of sources.

There is a general trauma commitment sharing a weekday and weekend on-calls with the existing teams. The successful applicant is expected to be fully trained in elective hand surgery and general orthopaedic trauma.

The Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest District General Hospitals in the country.

The hospital achieved Foundation Trust status on 1st June 2006 and was the first Foundation Trust in the South Central Strategic Health Authority.

The Trust is Reading's biggest employer and may form the central hospital for one of the country's new medical schools.


The Trauma and Orthopaedics Department at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust provides a comprehensive Trauma and Orthopaedic Service in all aspects of emergency and elective surgery both for adults and children.


We form part of the Thames Valley Trauma Network and work in partnership with neighbouring Trusts across the Thames Valley to provide the best possible standard of care to our patients.

Patients that require specialist intervention and sarcoma care may be treated at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre or the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford which is the regional specialist-commissioned Orthopaedic and Major Trauma provider.


We are a training department, welcoming and investing in student nurses, therapists, junior doctors and regularly host work experience students across all specialisms and offer five highly respected and sought after fellowships, as well as offering training opportunities across all clinical and administrative disciplines.

The post holder will share clinical and managerial leadership within the Trauma and Orthopaedic service with the present consultants. An office base with secretarial and administrative support will be provided.


There is an expectation that all consultants will participate in trainee education and training, both in theatre and through running tutorials, viva practice, etc.

This is an important aspect of the role.

The Trust accommodates medical students from Oxford and Southampton Universities, attracts high calibre trainees and has a good exam success record.


The post holder will work towards facilitating, growing and consolidating a research culture within their department/specialty, whilst supporting the ambitions of research within the organisation to ensure the Trust remains an excellent organisation to host research and support its own research portfolio in line with NHS and NIHR priorities.
