    Job summary

    We are looking for an enthusiastic, dedicated individual to joinour friendly team to allow us to provide a high quality and efficientMicrobiology diagnostic service for our patients and service users. You will beworking alongside a team of Medical laboratory assistants, Associate Practitioners and Biomedical Scientists.

    The post holder will be working hours/week within thecurrent shift systems; weekdays 09:00-17:00, late shift 12-20:00,weekends and bank holidays are currently rostered 08:00 16:00 core hours,plus a night shift service

    The Microbiology Department receives approximately 690,000specimens per year running approx. million tests. The department currentlyuses the Clinsys Winpath computer LIMS system and iPassport QMS.

    This is a modern well equipped laboratory, with a range ofautomation including the Biomerieux MALDI-TOF, Vitek 2, and Virtuo Blood cultureanalysers, the Sedimax Urine analyser, Mast Urisystem, DS2, VIDAS 3, COBAS 6800, Diasorin Liaison, QiagenNeumodx ,Cepheid GeneXpert and Biofire Filmarray.

    The Department has UKAS accreditation. It is approved bythe IBMS as a training laboratory. The Department has a proven track record intraining and is committed to further education and personal development ofstaff.

    Main duties of the job

    Main Duties include:

    Receipt and sortingof samples that arrive in the department

    Supporting the roleof the Biomedical Scientists (BMS) within the Microbiology department.

    Pre-analyticalpreparation of specimens.

    Data entry of patientinformation/request forms onto the laboratory information systems.

    Telephone enquiriesand results service

    Assisting withkeeping the laboratory clean and tidy, autoclaving and housekeeping duties.

    Job description

    Job responsibilities

    As an MLA the post holder will be responsiblefor processing patient specimens for biomedical testing and maintaining allrecords involved in the diagnostic pathway after receiving appropriate trainingand ability to demonstrate competence. This includes: receiving, sorting,labelling and preparing specimens; resolving issues such as mislabelled ormissing samples, performing reception duties, data entry, dealing withtelephone enquiries and relaying test results to clinicians and otherhealthcare workers, performing general housekeeping duties.

    Qualifications

    Essential

  • *Good standard of education to at least GCSE level.
  • NVQ level 2 Laboratory Science or equivalent
  • Willing to undertake any necessary in-house training.
  • Desirable

  • *IBMS Certificate of Achievement
  • *NVQ Level 3 Laboratory Science or equivalent
  • Experience

    Essential

  • Has experience of working in a laboratory and has practical experience of performing regular routine laboratory investigations.
  • Desirable

  • Experience of working in an NHS Laboratory
