    Job summary

    In August 2019, the Anaesthetic Department was awarded ACSA accreditation by the Royal College of Anaesthetists, including for vascular and ophthalmic anaesthetic services. We are very proud of this achievement, a number of our practices have been added to the good practice list by the ACSA committee from a very complimentary report.

    The Department currently consists of 42 consultants; 31 Consultant General Anaesthetists and 14 Intensive Care Consultants. It is supported by a Matron, Deputy Matron for Critical Care, Deputy Matron for Theatres, Directorate Manager, Assistant Directorate Manager and 2 Administrators for Anaesthetic Services.

    The post holder is intended to provide Consultant cover for Critical Care as detailed below and Anaesthetic services for surgery.

    The post has 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) comprising Direct Clinical Care (DCC; , including on-call as identified in the weekly timetable, and Supporting Programmed Activity (SPA; The on-call responsibilities cover Critical Care only.

    Non-Critical Care DCC includes lists in the theatre suites, remote sites (radiology, MRI etc.) and as starred consultant (a 'floating' consultant who covers trainees doing solo lists, specialty doctors, recovery, colleagues who need assistance).

    Main duties of the job

  • Daily Ward rounds
  • The Consultant is responsible for guiding and managing all aspects of patient care, formulating and communicating a consistent treatment plan with all members of the team
  • Performing, teaching and supervising any therapeutic or diagnostic manoeuvres as required is also expected
  • The post holder will provide consultant delivered anaesthetic services for all specialties (for which they have appropriate training), which will be allocated according to service need.
  • participate in continuing professional development and attain the required standards in CPD as set by the Royal College of Anaesthetists and the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine
  • Participate in the strengthened appraisal and job planning process
  • Be involved in and aware of the Clinical Governance issues of the Trust
  • Participate in clinical audit
  • On call rota 1 in 10, A level Paid Category, 3% supplement

    Registration Requirments

    Essential

  • Full GMC Registration with license to practice
  • CCT in Anaesthesia (or within 6 months of CCT at interview) OR eligible for entry onto specialist register (CESR etc.)
  • CCT in Intensive Care Medicine (or within 6 months of CCT at interview) OR eligible for entry onto specialist register (CESR etc.)
  • Qualifications

    Essential

  • FFICM or recognised equivalent qualification
  • FRCA or recognised equivalent qualification
  • Degree from a recognised University
  • Relevant professional qualifications
  • Eligible for entry in GMC specialist register (within 6 months)
  • Relevent Knowledge and experience

    Essential

  • Wide experience in ICM and General Anaesthesia
  • Ability for the care of patients and offer expert clinical opinion in the specialty
  • Desirable

  • Ability to manage and lead the specialist unit if required
  • Experience of teaching special clinical skills
