About The Role:


Training salary £23,730 p.a. following successful completion of the Post Graduate Diploma salary will rise to £28,395 - £35,126 p.a.


The role of the Trainee Education Mental Health Practitioners (TEMHPs) is to deliver short term low intensity Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) informed interventions for children and young people aged 5 -19 years with anxiety, low mood, common challenging behaviours, family and peer relationship difficulties, difficulty adjusting to change and transition or difficulty managing emotions in educational settings.


Trainee EMHP will also work with Designated Mental Health Leads and other educational staff to build on and develop evidenced-based Whole School Approaches.

Trainee EMHP's must undertake a Post Graduate Diploma in Mental Health Practice in Education Settings qualification at Northumbria University. During term time you will be required to attend (blended
- online and face to face) Northumbria University two days per week.


The 12 month post graduate course will start in September 2023 and will consist of academic and supervised practice learning across mental health services and educational settings, such as primary and secondary schools, and further education colleges.


On successful completion of training, Trainee EMHP's will be equipped with the necessary skills, knowledge and capabilities to work as a qualified EMHP as autonomous and responsible practitioners within their scope of practice, alongside educations colleagues, delivering schools' overarching approach to providing mental health and wellbeing support for children and young people.


About You:

Compass GO(NEL Mental Health Support Team) is an early intervention mental health and emotional wellbeing service.

The service delivers evidenced based interventions for children and young people with mild to moderate mental health and wellbeing needs.

It is part of the Mental Health Support Team Trailblazer Pilot, which has been commissioned by the Dept of Education & NHSE following the 'Transforming Children and Young People's

Mental Health Care Provision:

A Green Paper' The trailblazer will increase the children and young people's mental health workforce and increase capacity to support pupils.


Compass GOaims to:

  • Ensure children and young people access the right early help, in the right setting removing duplication and preventing CYP/families being 'bounced' inbetween services
  • Help children and young people (519 years) to manage their feelings, behaviours, thoughts, physical sensations so that they can better engage with their learning and education
  • Work alongside educational staff to embed Whole School Approaches at all levels
