The starting salary for this role is £46,634 per annum for working 36 hours per week. The role is offered as a 24-month fixed-term contract or secondment opportunity.

As a Principal Transport Development Planning Officer you will be a leading member of the team responsible for supporting and mentoring colleagues and contributing to the sustainable development of the County through theprovision of timely and appropriate transport impact and infrastructure advice to local planning authorities and associated stakeholders in a diverse and varied region.


You will ensure the promotion of sustainable development, maintaining, and improving road safety, whilst minimising traffic generation and maximising sustainable modal split, within the framework of land use planning policy and guidance.


Your energy and commitment will help Surrey to become a carbon free county by 2050.

Personal development and progression play a big part in the ethos of the Transport Development Planning Team and Surrey County Council as a whole. You will be part of an enthusiastic team who will support your continued development; youwill also be a line manager and provide support to junior staff members.

  • Ability to negotiate confidently with planning applicants, developers and their agents to safely deliver improvements to a range of school projects and development schemes
  • An ability to prioritise workloads with project management experience with the ability to be flexible and work under pressure as part of a team
  • Relevant degree or equivalent plus approximately 10 years transport development planning experience, OR approximately 13 years transport development planning experience
  • The ability to assist in team management with a track record of mentoring and guiding junior staff
  • A sound understanding of relevant highway and planning technical matters (such as the Highways Act 1980) with an indepth knowledge of all aspects of transportation development planning work
  • Effective communication skills and able to develop and maintain strong relationships
  • Political awareness and sensitivity, willingness to embrace new ways of working and to work across boundaries.


Please note, You will also require a full UK driving license and be willing to travel regularly within the county.
