    Job Summary

    The Department Operations Manager leads the professional and technical operations of the Department, contributing to strategic development and planning across all areas as an integral part of the Departmental leadership team, and is a close working partner to the Head of Department. The role has a wide and varied set of responsibilities, keeping everything running smoothly and acting as a contact point across the wider university community.

    Duties and responsibilities

    • To lead the professional and technical operations of the Department, delivering operational excellence across all technical and administrative activities, and managing the Department's external relations initiatives.
    • To contribute to strategic development and planning, advising the Head of Department as part of the Departmental leadership team.
    • To determine and implement the Department's support strategy for teaching and research, developing and evolving administrative policies and procedures and implementing those already established.
    • To coordinate with the Support Service groups across the Faculty and College to ensure effective administrative support for the Department, and to initiate and manage change.
    • To ensure appropriate support and management is in place for high-level, complex collaborative projects.

    Essential requirements

    The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:

    • Extensive experience in the Higher Education sector or in a similar or related role(s) or substantial relevant experience in another sector, demonstrating development through involvement in a series of progressively demanding work roles
    • Proven experience of and ability to manage projects with experience of establishing new facilities/operations
    • Significant proven staff management experience, with the ability to gain support, motivate and develop.
    • Extensive experience of developing and managing financial and other resources, including preparing, managing and monitoring budgets, and the preparation and analysis of management reports to inform financial and strategic decision-making.
    • Outstanding organisational skills and demonstrable ability to plan strategically. Ability to identify and set priorities (both own and other staff) and work to deadlines.
    • Ability to generate innovative ideas and adept at finding solutions to improve and further both policy and processes.
