Rochdale Sixth Form College (RSFC) opened in 2010 to address the significant underachievement in A Level performance in the borough. Since then it has raised achievement in the area dramatically and is recognised nationally as a centre of excellence. The college is rated Ofsted outstanding and, is consistently ranked as one of the highest performing colleges in the country according to the DfE's performance tables and national achievement rate tables.
RSFC currently offers Pearson English Literature and AQA English Language to approximately 350 students, and AQA GCSE English Language to approximately 50 students. The English department has a well-resourced curriculum sequenced specifically for the demands of the linear specification, with a focus on revision and retrieval, supported by dedicated study areas designed to help both teachers and students ensure that learners reach their maximum potential. There are currently six English teachers, who have a great team ethos, frequently share best practice and are subject experts. The team includes two senior leaders, two former principal examiners and two further experienced examiners. The department also offers a range of exciting enrichment activities as well as partnerships with universities and external education providers which allows us to challenge and extend the learning of all our students.
The area is looking to introduce English combined for 2025 and is currently in the process of planning how this will be implemented.
Results in the department are consistently outstanding, with both A-level departments achieving at least ALPS 3 in the last two years. GCSE English has an in-year pass rate of over 90% for year 12, and all students have passed their GCSE re-sit by the time they leave, highlighting the excellent value that is added in the department.
