    Job overview

    The Pathology departments at South Tees Hospital (STH) and North Tees and Hartlepool (NTH) are working collaboratively to develop a joint service called Tees Valley Pathology with services being delivered on all hospital sites. The new service model requires an individual to help lead the Microbiology department. While employment will be with STH the post will require cross site working.

    We are looking for an enthusiastic healthcare professional who can understand the changing services of pathology and represent the new service going forward. You must have the appropriate experience, knowledge and skills to join our Cellular Sciences team, working in Microbiology (alongside the Lead Biomedical Scientist in Bacteriology and Lead Biomedical Scientist Virology/Molecular) to provide services across the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough, Friarage Hospital in Northallerton, University Hospital North Tees in Stockton and University Hartlepool Hospital in Hartlepool sites, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and helping maintain the provision of an effective and efficient service.

    We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic candidate with a flexible approach to work. The post will be to supervise and manage the day to day running of the busy Microbiology department across all parts of the service. The successful candidate will have proven management skills and extensive technical and theoretical knowledge of routine and specialist microbiology.

    Main duties of the job

    All departments have full UKAS accreditation and are approved IBMS training laboratories.

    Microbiology is a dynamic and forward thinking department providing an expert 24/7 service across all our hospital sites.

    We are looking for someone with extensive knowledge and experience of working within a Microbiology laboratory. Previous experience of method or equipment validation, and a familiarity with the requirements for ISO15189 is essential. The successful candidate will possess the investigative and presentation skills required to lead on all aspects of quality assurance, both internal and external, across the Microbiology service, with the aim of maintaining standards for UKAS accreditation.

    You will hold an FIBMS and/or MSc and/or HSD (or equivalent experience) and a recognised management qualification (or equivalent experience). Where equivalence is being used to meet essential criteria, please provide details in your supporting statement.

    You must be able to demonstrate a commitment to CPD, have excellent interpersonal and time-management skills.

    Essential criteria

  • Registered as a Biomedical Scientist (BMS) with the Health Care Professions Council
  • BMS Specialist Diploma in Microbiology or evidence based post registration spe-cialty training in accordance with Institute of Biomedical Sciences IBMS guidelines
  • Post graduate qualification (FIBMS / MSc) or evidenced equivalent experience in ap-propriate discipline
  • Supervisory/management qualification or equivalent experience
  • Experience
