    Job Introduction

    Exciting opportunities are now available for two enthusiastic and skilled Electrical Design Engineers to join our expanding Engineering Design (ED) team based at our offices in Tipton.

    The Engineering Design team prepare electrical, protection/control, mechanical and civil designs for schemes to construct extend or modify substations energised at up to 132kV.

    The team develops selected schemes from a broad engineering brief into a fully specified build package. The team also has responsibility for the preparation, issue and archival of protection relay configurations and settings at up to 132kV.

    The ED Team handles multiple commissions at any time ranging in capital value from £50k to £10m.

    As part of our hybrid working approach and in line with our policy, this role allows you to apply for a mix of office and home working. Hybrid working can only be considered once your initial training is complete and subject to business need.

    *Please note the successful candidate may initially be appointed at a lower salary until all relevant courses and training are complete.

    Evidence of your qualifications will be required prior to appointment.

    If you are offered a position, you will be required to complete and provide a satisfactory basic DBS check that shows any unspent convictions or conditional cautions.

    Main responsibilities

    As a Design Engineer, you will provide design output in the following areas:-

  • Physical design of indoor and open-terminal substations (preparation of substation layouts and associated detailed mechanical drawings/ schedules)
  • Formulation of control/ protection and SCADA schemes for substation projects (preparation of schematics, cable schedules, wiring diagrams and the like, primarily for interfacing items of electrical plant, protection and telecontrol).
  • Preparation of detailed engineering drawings/ diagrams in an AutoCAD environment
  • Ideal candidate

    Where applicants do not have familiarity with all of the above areas, they would be expected to demonstrate certain core skills in an engineering design environment. Where applicants initially lack particular skills, appointment on a designate basis may be considered. Training and support will be given to assist the appointee to develop into the role where necessary.

    Candidates will further be expected to demonstrate customer focus, flexibility, good communication skills and an ability to manage a number of design commissions.

    Candidates should ideally be qualified to a national certificate level or equivalent in an engineering discipline. Ideally, applicants should have experience in preparing and manipulating engineering drawings using computer-aided design tools (e.g. AutoCAD). Applicants should hold a full UK driving licence.

    The successful candidate will need a full UK driving licence.
