Are you interested in an exciting career within the NHS?

If so, a post has become available within the challenging and diverse Clinical Coding Department. The role is based in the Weston Clinical Coding office with some home working available.

You will be responsible for translating medical terminology into national codes using ICD10 and OPCS4.


The requirement is to produce consistent, accurate, complete and timely coded clinical data, for use by the Trust Finance Department among others.


In your quest for accurate data, you will come into contact with a variety of staff of different levels throughout the Trust.

Experience is not essential as full training will be provided.

After approx. 2 years in post you will be required to sit and pass the national Clinical Coding exam.

  • Critically analyse the clinical information required to assign national codes in accordance with national guidelines with the guidance of the Trust Clinical Coding Manager.
  • Ensure that coded clinical data is entered into the Trust's computer systems and encoder system for every relevant patient care episode.
  • Ensure adherence to national procedures and guidelines for clinical coding.
  • Ensure adherence to local procedures for clinical coding relating to individual specialties/consultants.
  • Be able to work under pressure to meet local deadlines.
  • Be able to concentrate for long periods of time.
  • Be able to cope with reading patient information which may be distressing including patient related photographs which may be of a graphic nature.
  • Liaise with the appropriate staff for any queries arising during the abstraction process.
  • Document any shortcomings in the national guidelines for submission to the Trust Clinical Coding
  • Attend all nationally and locally required training for the use of ICD10 and OPCS4 coding standards.
  • Attend meetings arranged by the Trust Clinical Coding Manager to discuss current coding issues.
