Senior Design Engineer - Structures

As a Senior Design Engineer specialising in Structures, you will be responsible for developing and optimizing the structural components and systems that form the backbone of our vehicles.

Working within a collaborative and dynamic environment, you will contribute to various aspects of project execution, from initial design concepts to final product release.

This role offers the opportunity to apply your technical expertise and creativity to shape the future of automotive engineering at Gordon Murray Group.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide oversight and direction to their team across various projects, ensuring consistency and alignment of their specialized area throughout the organization.
• Take the lead in conducting research and development within their area of expertise, with a focus on driving future advancements and innovation.
• Facilitate and chair meetings with the design team, offering guidance and advice as needed to optimize project outcomes.
• Collaborate with suppliers to explore emerging technologies and implement design for manufacturability (DFM) practices, while establishing and enforcing company standards for quality and inspection.
• Develop comprehensive design and test specifications for each project, collaborating with test houses, universities, and industry partners to implement current and future technologies.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

• Experience in composite structural design into vehicle structures.
• Design of bolted joints and lightweight fixation technologies.
• Design of supporting frames external and internal with a good understanding of load paths and light weight design solutions.
• Lateral thinking approach to stiff and light weight structures.
• Experience in mixed materials design for battery structures, composites, aluminium, and steels.
• Thorough knowledge of welding, and spot welding and design of welded joints and junctions. Understanding and design experience for HAZ.
• Experience in casting and extrusion design.
• Good understanding of various types of corrosion of dissimilar materials and preventative measures
• Design using extrusions, pressings, ballistic and composite panels.
• Awareness and good approach to efficient light weight packaging design.
• Knowledge and understanding of relevant Crash legislation for automotive structures.
• Good understanding of CAE simulation for linear and non-linear analysis, including crash, particularly side impact pole and barrier testing.
• Awareness and understanding of the various materials and processes for sustainability and recycling.
