About the role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and highly motivated Marine Geoscientist to join the BGS Environmental Change, Adaptation & Resilience (ECAR) challenge area at our offices in Edinburgh.

As a Marine Geoscientist, you will participate in projects for the offshore renewables industry and provide input into BGS's marine geohazard research.

You will be required to undertake the detailed analysis and interpretation of a variety of datasets including geotechnical and geophysical logs and borehole data.

You will analyse and interpret geotechnical laboratory and in-situ testing results, effectively integrating these data with seismostratigraphic interpretations to develop scientifically robust, processed based "ground models" which can be used to inform the planning and installation of offshore infrastructure (windfarms, tidal, cables).

In addition, you will also become involved in the 2D and 3D mapping of the seabed and shallow subsurface, and as part of the BGS Marine Geoscience community you will encouraged to share your knowledge and contribute towards our research portfolio investigating past and present processes (e.g., glaciation, mobile sediments) that have affected the UK continental shelf.

About you

The post involves team working, therefore you should be able to work flexibly and effectively with others, have good time management skills and be able to work on several tasks concurrently.

This role will also require you to undertake offshore field work on survey vessels, potentially including day working on small survey vessels and longer 2 to 4-week assignments on larger ships.

The role qualifies for offshore allowances and overtime payments when working extended hours and at weekends.

Please also refer to the specific essential and desirable skills criteria for this post.
