NUH has an excellent reputation as a provider of clinical placements for orthoptic undergraduates, optometrists, medical students, post graduate medics and other health professionals and the post holder would be expected to contribute to this clinical teaching role and support other orthoptists in delivering their teaching responsibilities.

A Diploma/Degree in Orthoptics plus HcPC registration is required and experience as a clinical tutor would be advantageous.

As part of our commitment to provide the best care to our patients, we have extended services, this may include the ability to work various shifts including weekdays, weekends, bank holiday days and varying hours between 7.00am and 8.00pm to support the service as required.

Main duties of the job

To work autonomously as an advanced practitioner in undertaking highly specialised orthoptic assessment, diagnosis and management.
To undertake the lead role for a subspeciality service with the orthoptic/ophthalmology service and liaise with the Head Orthoptist regarding the service development and be the link for orthoptists/other colleagues requiring expert advice within this area.
To undertake the assessment and management of patients referred following stroke, both on the ward and as outpatients.
To undertake the role of audit lead and contribute to research within the department.
As a clinical tutor make a significant contribution to the theoretical and clinical training of orthoptic undergraduates on placement to the department

Working for our organisation

Ophthalmology Services include eye casualty, day case, in-patient and outpatient facilities.

It has strong links to the University of Nottingham through research and works closely with the regional Diabetic Eye Screening Service.

We have a large team of Consultant Ophthalmologists, who provide outpatient and surgical services in a full range of Ophthalmology sub-speciality clinics.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To work autonomously as an advanced practitioner in undertaking highly specialised orthoptic assessment, diagnosis and management of patients of all ages, ranging from preterm babies to the elderly and who have various communication abilities
To undertake the lead role for a subspeciality service with the orthoptic/ophthalmology service and liaise with the Head Orthoptist regarding the service development and be the link for orthoptists/other colleagues requiring expert advice within this area.
To undertake the assessment and management of patients referred following stroke, both on the ward and as outpatients.
To be familiar with the clinical role of all advanced orthoptists within the department and participate in the delivery of these clinics/services as required including undertaking clinics at the Child development centre and special schools.
To make a significant contribution to audit and research within the department leading in audit within specific area of special interest/responsibility.
As a clinical tutor make a significant contribution to the theoretical and clinical training of orthoptic undergraduates on placement to the department
To undertake the role of mentor and clinical supervisor for the department with responsibility for providing mentoring for orthoptic students on placement to the department and to newly appointed junior orthoptic staff

Experience

Clinical experience in an orthoptic department including areas of special interest thyroid, neuro, stroke.
Clinical audit and research experience
Multiprofessional working
Theoretical and clinical teaching of Orthoptics

Desirable criteria

Experience in delivering extended roles outside the traditional area of orthoptic practise.
