LOCATION:
St John's Wood


WORKING HOURS:
35 hours per week (flexitime) including evenings and weekends when required to support synagogue and hall hire events.


SALARY:
Between £
38,000 - £45,000 per annum (based on experience)

PURPOSE OF JOB:

The post holder will be responsible for overseeing the health and safety, security and maintenance of the Synagogue building and grounds to ensure that all activities and programs are supported efficiently and effectively.

The scope of therole includes similarly overseeing the Senior Rabbi's home located close to the Synagogue.

SCOPE OF JOB The main activities and responsibilities of the job holder will be:

  • To understand the operations of the Synagogue and to help and support the broad Synagogue team of office staff, Rabbinic team, Kindergarten, Hebrew School, volunteers, honorary officers to deliver a high-quality service that meets the expectations of theSynagogue's stakeholders
  • To ensure that the building is prepared for a large variety of religious, educational, welfare and social events, and appropriately cleaned after the event
  • To ensure standards of safety, cleanliness and tidiness are effectively maintained and monitored throughout the Synagogue and grounds
  • To provide a variety of essential handyperson/cleaning/security functions to aid the smooth running of the Synagogue
  • To work closely with the United Synagogue Property Department, local authorities, and other stakeholders (where appropriate)
  • Oversee security of the building and grounds and carrying out minor maintenance of the premises, internal fixtures, fittings, and furniture
  • Ensure that the Synagogue follows all relevant Health & Safety regulations (including food hygiene, fire precautions, water safety etc)
  • Having responsibility for the maintenance of the building and facilities
  • Whilst the Facilities Manager is primarily responsible for overseeing the work of contractors and agency staff, there will be times when the post holder will personally be required to perform certain roles. The scope of the role includes similarly overseeingthe maintenance of the Senior Rabbi's home located close to the Synagogue.

GENERIC DUTIES

  • Committed to the aims of the United Synagogue and act as an ambassador for the organisation.
  • Comply with The United Synagogue's policies and procedures and code of expectations.
  • Bring to the attention of senior staff any health and safety requirements, which become obvious. In the event of any immediate danger, to take the appropriate action to reduce risk to physical danger to employees, members, contractors, volunteers, children,parents, visitors, or staff.
  • Carry out any other reasonable duties as requested by the line manager or other designated senior staff that is consistent with the nature of the job and its level of responsibility.
  • Undertake appropriate training as requested by the line manager in conjunction with the Human Resources Department. And be committed to own continuous professional development.

  • Experience in facilities management
  • Experience of complying with Health and Safety policies and procedures
  • To speak in a polite and responsible manner to all other people, including Synagogue members, visitors, and staff
  • Good oral and written communication skills

  • Respectful of the needs of the Synagogue and its ethos and values
  • To be reliable, trustworthy, hardworking, and approachable
  • Ability to safely move furniture and equipment
  • Ability to carry out some minor and emergency repairs/defect to Synagogue premises, hall and other rooms as might reasonably be expected of a caretaker Knowledge:
  • Some knowledge of Jewish customs and practices
