    We are currently seeking a Fire Engineer for our UK Leeds office. This role is required due to our growing portfolio of exciting projects and to assist in the development of our team.

    You will be working with a creative, innovative, multi-cultural and self-motivated team of fire safety consultants throughout the UK and Middle East. The successful candidate will complement our fire safety consultants by assisting with the implementation of the fire engineering services on our projects. We are supported by Arup Fire engineering teams located in 20 offices around the World.

    The Opportunity

    The successful candidate will form part of the project team on a range of different projects, managing junior engineers, and being supported by the wider team as necessary. The role will involve interactive and collaborative working with our fire engineers and with colleagues throughout the multidisciplinary teams at Arup. The role gives the opportunity to travel to our 10 UK offices or further afield as projects require. The projects will be diverse, exciting and range from conceptual fire strategy development through to handing over landmark projects in the built environment. By working at Arup you will be working for the leading fire consultancy in the UK.

    Our Fire Engineering team takes a particularly active role in the development of our people and routinely provide opportunities to attend appropriate training and development courses. Also because of the developing nature of fire engineering, employees are encouraged to attend the appropriate annual conferences and CPD events (both internal and external). Once you have demonstrated a suitable skill in fire engineering and delivery of projects there will be a number of opportunities to advance your career.

    Is this role right for you?

    As a Project Engineer (PE) you would be expected to:

    • Understand and implement the principle of fire science on real projects via the engineering process (goals, objectives, building appraisal and hazards, design fire scenarios etc).
    • Implement and investigate appropriate legislation and design guidance for use on your projects.
    • Understand the total fire concept: from the client brief through to construction and operation.
    • Take responsibility for selecting (under guidance in many instances) appropriate assessment methods and ensuring that they within their boundaries and limitations of application.
    • Take an active interest in your own professional learning and development and working with a mentor on a career path that suits.
    • Receive and manage various tasks entrusted to you by the Project Manager (PM).
    • Begin to take an increasing role in project management responsibilities on projects and on research initiatives.
    • In collaboration with the rest of the design team, aim to develop and implement fire strategies.
    • Perform tasks ranging from undertaking individual risks assessments, fire engineered analysis including means of escape calculations and smoke modeling through to creating fire strategies for whole buildings and other structures. Work safely on site to observe fire strategy implementation and learning to understanding fire safety operations and management in real buildings.
    • Actively engage in design review meetings to propose innovative or better performing solutions.
    • In collaboration with your mentor and team leader, aim to develop the skills and knowledge relevant to your role.
    • Actively participate on various internal knowledge forums.
    • Learn about business development and participate as appropriate to your grade; develop a network of colleagues in Arup, colleagues outside Arup and create a client base.

    Qualifications

    • You will have as a minimum a Bachelor's degree in a relevant degree subject (fire engineering, other types of engineering, or architecture related degree).
    • You should have registered with a relevant institution such as the Institution of Fire Engineers and should be working towards gaining Chartered Engineer status.

    Required skills and knowledge

    • 2 –5 years' experience in a fire engineering consultancy or similar environment (industry related).
    • Awareness of appropriate legislation and design guidance for use in the UK.
    • Experience in delivering fire strategies and developing fire engineered solutions.
    • Understand the fire engineering challenges relevant to different design stages from the client brief through to construction and operation.
    • Possess excellent report writing and communication skills, be collaborative, be creative and engaging.
    • Have the ability to work on multiple projects concurrently, working to tight deadlines and juggling multiple demands and deliverables.
    • Be proactive in resolving issues, creating solutions, relying on others as required for assistance and experience.
