    Default job background
    Description

Dumfries Infirmary seeks to appoint an enthusiastic individual to assist in delivery of undergraduate surgical teaching within the hospital. Suitable candidates will have completed Foundation training or equivalent as a minimum. This post would suit an existing trainee wishing out of programme experience in medical education, or alternatively any doctor wishing to improve educational skills.

This is a 10 session post. The successful candidate will be primarily responsible for organising and helping deliver teaching to 3rd and 4th year surgical students on rotation from Glasgow University. This will include bedside teaching, tutorials, simulation and educational supervision.

It is anticipated that 5 sessions per week will be devoted to teaching with the majority of this time dedicated to Glasgow Universitys Surgical students. However, some of this time should be used flexibly to support students in other specialties, for example medicine, anaesthetics or emergency medicine, and from other universities, namely St Andrews, Dundee and Edinburgh.

The remaining 5 sessions will cover clinical duties on inpatient surgical wards. Responsibilities would include supporting foundation doctors, assessing acutely unwell patients, managing medical co-morbidities in surgical patients and liaising with the senior surgical team.

It is anticipated that development time will be taken whilst the students are on holiday.

In addition, there is no fixed on call commitment with this post though we anticipate there will be opportunities for on call as part of our internal locum bank, if desired. This could include medicine, surgical or emergency medicine depending on the successful candidates experience.

Dumfries teaches Glasgow students in their 3rd, 4th and 5th year, Edinburgh students in their 5th and 6th year and ScotGEM students in their 2nd, 3rd and 4th years (ScotGEM is a 4 year postgraduate degree run by St Andrews and Dundee that is based mainly in primary care with secondary care bursts).

Our teaching programmes are highly rated by our students whose feedback places us at or near the top of Scotlands teaching league tables.

As part of our commitment to excellent teaching we would support a successful candidate in their own personal development which would include study leave and access to a study budget. The details of this will be discussed and decided upon at appointment.
