    Description

The Philosophy Department sits within the School of Social Sciences and is a research-oriented department delivering excellent teaching to undergraduate and postgraduate students. To further strengthen our research and teaching portfolio, in line with our strategic objectives, the Department wishes to appoint the recently vacated Samuel Hall Chair.

We are looking for candidates with an outstanding research record, who will be proactive in leading the research culture of the department. Candidates whose research has impact beyond academia are particularly encouraged.

The Department of Philosophy has established a reputation in a number of areas of philosophy. A growing strength is our work in Engaged Philosophy: a term that we take to embrace any area of philosophy that is concerned with practical applications and impact beyond the discipline itself. Other areas of particular strength are the history of analytical philosophy, philosophy of mind and language, and metaphysics. The Department has a very active research culture, including a large and vibrant cohort of PhD students, and postdoctoral researchers.

The School is strongly committed to promoting equality and diversity, including the Athena SWAN charter for gender equality in higher education. The School holds a Bronze Award which recognises our good practice in relation to gender; including flexible working arrangements, family-friendly policies, and support to allow staff to achieve a good work-life balance. As an equal opportunities employer, we welcome applications from all suitably qualified persons. However, as black and minority ethnic (BME) candidates are currently under-represented at this level in this area, we would particularly welcome applications from BME applicants. All appointments will be made on merit.
