The UM Planning, Strategy and Data team are a fundamental part of the wider UM Birmingham Media team, as well as supporting and working closely with the full UM and McCann Central teams across our multiple offices.

We leverage the transformational power of rich business analytics and real-time intelligence to maximise growth for our clients and activate the full customer journey across content, connections and culture.


Our client base spreads from clients with budgets in the tens of thousands to those with budgets in the tens of millions, spread across: healthcare, power tools, home appliances, travel and food and technology.


We are in the middle of a period of rapid growth and are looking for an apprentice hungry to learn the foundation of data analysis, insights and statistical modelling, along with how these tasks fit into the wider view of media and marketing growth for brands and businesses.

This role will involve integration with other areas of the Media team as we seek to deliver truly integrated media services for our clients.


The role will span both internal and external communication and relationship building, working with the planning, strategy and data team, but also the wider UM and McCann teams across the country.

This will also develop into client communication (as and when needed), whilst being supported by those around you as the role develops.


Your core duties will include:


  • Supporting on key data and analytics projects for clients and new business
  • Understanding data needs and translating raw data to clean data for further analysis
  • Learning our reporting suite solutions across PowerBI, Supermetrics, Looker Studio and Excel
  • Analysing and interpreting data to support decision making
  • Building, amending and preparing daily, weekly and monthly reports across key clients
  • Serving as a supporting reporting contact for the internal team
  • Assisting with the preparation of PowerPoint presentations
  • Undertake adhoc reporting for the wider media team as and when required to do so
  • Supporting with collaboration and creation of innovative solutions to support our product stack
  • Act as a positive advocate for the company at all times
Entry requirements

Grade C/4 in Maths and English

And understanding of Microsoft Excel.

Training to be provided

Data Technician Apprenticeship Level 3


You will learn how to do the following:
source data from a collection of already identified trusted sources in a secure manner

collate and format data to facilitate processing and presentation for review and further advanced analysis by others

present data for review and analysis by others, using required medium for example tables, charts and graphs

blend data by combining data from various sources and formats to explore its relevance for the business needs


analyse simple and complex structured and unstructured data to support business outcomes using basic statistical methods to analyse the data.

validate results of analysis using various techniques, e.g cross checking, to identify faults in data results and to ensure data quality

communicate results verbally, through reports and technical documentation and tailoring the message for the audience

store, manage and share data securely in a compliant manner

collaborate with people both internally and externally at all levels with a view to creating value from data

practise continuous self learning to keep up to date with technological developments to enhance relevant skills and take responsibility for own professional development

We are looking to help you build a career in data and analytics and have a proven track record of developing apprentices and progressing them within the business.

This means there will be a full-time, permanent role available as a Data & Insights Executive upon completion of the apprenticeship and beyond
