Hygiene Manager (Food Sector)


To lead and manage an effective 24 hour Hygiene Function ensuring systems and standards are at all times fully compliant with relevant Legislation, Customer/BRC and Site requirements.

Work closely with colleagues across the site to improve quality and hygieneto our customers and reduce complaints.


To work with the Technical Manager in maintaining the hygiene system and to ensure that all documented procedures are completed.

To control, monitor and audit hygiene practices, to ensure that standards are maintained throughout site operations.

To ensure that production are provided with clean equipment and environment to ensure customer orders are met in full.


Hygiene Manager Key tasks:


  • To work in a safe manner in compliance with company H&S policy and statutory H&S legislation.
  • Management of Hygiene team to ensure all scheduled tasks are completed on time and to an acceptable standard.
  • Draw up, implement & revise hygiene policies and Standard Operating Procedures for hygiene operations in conjunction with Chemical suppliers to ensure best practices are maintained throughout
  • Manage in conjunction with the Technicalteam, all contracts for Cleaning chemicals, laundry, pest control and any other related services within agreed budget.
  • Identify and implement cost savings where possible.
  • Maintain adequate stocks of cleaning chemicals, cleaning equipment and PPE
  • Ensure Audit readiness for site and systems in relation to hygiene and pest control
  • Maximize team performance, efficiency and service levels and drive employee engagement. Develop enhanced and future fit employee skillset and flexibility across the shift teams
  • Involvement in monitoring of hygiene standards by engaging with the environmental swab and ATP program.
  • Leading investigation and corrective action for poor environmental monitoring results

  • Support H&S Manager and Engineering Manager with regard toEnvironmental controls and standards
  • Responsible for the conduct of your team at work, this includes but is not limited to appropriate dress code, punctuality, absences level, trainingand output.
  • Maintain a high factory profile and liaise with all departments to promote consistency and a high level of service throughout the business.
  • Support the HR function with absent management, relevant disciplinary procedures and provide update'son any recruitment requirements.
  • Member of site Auditing team and site HACCP team.
  • To ensure all staff are adequately trained and inducted on a regularly basis.
  • Prepare Monthly Hygiene reports and present at site Hygiene/Technical meeting
  • Any other reasonable duties allocated by a member of the senior management team
  • End of Day clean downs within the Butchery and in the cookroom are fully observed taking into consideration the need for species and allergen control within the area.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of the cleaning to ensure good operational hygiene standards. Is it being done correctly as per the current cleaning cards?
  • To maintain and develop the current cleaning cards specific to the lines and areas within the site.
  • Carry out a comprehensive risk assessment on Hygiene of all the current assets on site and review all the cleaning practices used within the site to monitor their effectiveness. How could we make it better?
  • To ensure that cleaning schedules are prepared, communicatedand effectively implemented.
  • To ensure that there is the appropriate chemicals and cleaning equipment available. Liaise with the Quality Manager to source cleaning materials and ensure their supply
  • To actively communicate to the Technical Manager any thoughts or suggestions which will positively contribute to the continuous improvement of hygiene standards across the site and to agree appropriate actions

Hygiene Manager Key skills:

Working knowledge of relevant legislative criteria and industry standards for food production.

Good working knowledge of food hygiene
- preferably trained to intermediate food hygiene as a minimum.

COSHH trained with a good working knowledge of chemicals and hygiene equipment.

Basic awareness of Health and safety

General process and product knowledge

Knowledge of key legislation relating to the food industry

Good communication both written and verbal. Organised and able to work to tight deadlines.

Understanding of the company goals and structure - adaptability to work in a changing environment
