    Pharmacy Technician - Medicines Governance & Safety

    Department: Pharmacy

    Band 5 £28,407 - £34,581 per annum

    Hours: per week, all MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working

    An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic and enthusiastic Pharmacy Technician to join our Medicines Governance & Safety Team.

    As the Pharmacy Technician - Medicines Governance & Safety, you will play a crucial role in ensuring safe and effective medication practices within our organization. You will play a key role in the Pharmacy Medicines Governance and Safety team in delivering the technical aspects of the Medicines Safety agenda across the Trust. Clinical element to provide patient care at ward level is also part of the role. This is an exciting opportunity to make a significant impact on patient care and safety.

    The successful candidate will have a strong interest in Medicines Governance and Safety background and substantial experience in pharmacy practice. The ideal candidate should have a understanding of regulatory compliance, governance, medication safety and PSIRF. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential for effective collaboration with various healthcare professionals and stakeholders. The ability to work as a team player is crucial.

    Main duties of the job

  • The post holder will be responsible for supporting with and / or delivering of the technical aspects of the Medicines Governance & Safety service for Milton Keynes University Hospital (MKUH) NHS Foundation Trust, under the management of the Medication Safety Officer.
  • To assist with the delivery and development of the technical aspects of medicines management across the directorates.
  • To support the Medicines Governance & Safety team in the planning, development, and implementation of the Medicines Governance & Safety initiatives across the Trust.
  • To support the Medicines Advice Service in the maintenance and development of a safe and efficient Medicines Advice Service. This includes enquiry answering, database searching and maintenance / development of systems.
  • To participate in the provision of Pharmacy services across the organisation.

  • To ensure that appropriate levels of service are provided, in the areas you are responsible for, in accordance with statutory requirements and professional standards.
  • To be part of the Pharmacy team and work with staff within the Pharmacy Department and across the Trust, to enable the objectives of the Trust to be achieved.
  • Medicines Governance and Safety Responsibilities

  • To support the Senior Pharmacy Technician and Medication Safety Officer in the development, implementation, and evaluation of medicines safety initiatives across the organisation in line with relevant guidance
  • To support the Medicines Governance and Safety team in planning, developing and co-ordinating the implementation and maintenance of Medicines Governance and Safety initiatives across the Trust, in accordance with its changing needs and developments.
  • Medicines Management Responsibilities

  • To contribute to the provision of comprehensive Pharmacy service to the Trust, ensuring compliance with current directives, legislation, audits and Health and Safety.
  • To contribute to the delivery of clear Standard Operational Procedures in Pharmacy services in accordance with good practice, legal requirements, and professional standards.
  • Departmental Responsibilities

  • To contribute to the provision of all routine day to day pharmacy services in accordance with departmental and Trust requirements.
  • To be part of the dispensary team following completion of the in-house training programme involving; labelling, dispensing, stock supply and final release check.

  • To ensure appropriate levels of service are provided in accordance with statutory requirements and the General Pharmaceutical Council.
  • To respect confidentiality of information relating to patients and management and to ensure compliance with the Data Protection Act.

    Person Specification

    Qualifications and knowledge

    Essential

  • Registered Pharmacy Technician supported by evidence of CPD in line with GPhC requirements
  • BTEC + NVQ level 3 or equivalent
  • Accredited Checking Technician, or willing to work towards accredited checking technician status (successful candidate must achieve this accreditation within 12 months of start date)
  • Knowledge of medicines management, including relevant legislation and policies, acquired through basic qualification plus specialist training or experience as a medicine management technician
  • Evidence of providing advice in relation to patient care, including on common drug dosage and use. Able to communicate issues or changes to medication regimes or prescribing. Work in partnership with pharmacy staff and staff from other departments
  • Desirable

  • Completed and/or has the ability to deliver PSIRF training (Learning, engagement & oversight)
  • Completed and/or has the ability to deliver Human Factor training
  • Experience

    Essential

  • CPD portfolio demonstrating competent pharmacy practice post-qualification and showing evidence of:
  • Competence in medication counselling of patients
  • Experience of Hospital Pharmacy or Community Health Services
  • Experience of supporting with training of staff
  • Experience of participation in audit
  • Desirable

  • Experience in development or formulation of SOPs / guidelines
  • Experience of using eCare or other EPMA system
