The Department of Architecture is seeking a Post-Doctoral Research Associate to work on a European research project (HS4U) related to behaviour, design and health, in this instance applied to the architecture of cruise ships.

This is a full-time, fixed-term role within the department, with funding for 12 months in the first instance.

This role will suit a research-focused individual with a background and a PhD in architecture, planning or related discipline with a specialism in cognition, wayfinding, behaviour, health and/or wellbeing in architecture.

Experience in spatial design and analysis, a proven aptitude to use building simulation software, and a strong analytical skillset in both quantitative and qualitative research is required.

A pro-active approach to engagement, collaboration and experimentation, as well as sustainability more generally, will ensure that the workload is both exciting and fulfilling.

The aim of the research project is to monitor and contain health risks on board; to design sensors, systems and spaces to minimise spread of ill-health; and to improve health recovery and outcomes.

Working closely with the team and liaising regularly with a European consortium of experts in health, engineering and the cruise ship industry, the role holder will:

Map digitally the architecture of ships

- routes, spaces, etc.
- and design options.

Liaise with relevant stakeholders to gather data, define specific objectives, and provide recommendations.
Analyse passenger movement with regard to spatial configuration and health emergency scenarios.
Develop health promoting design solutions related to overall spatial arrangement to limit crosscontamination.
Propose health promoting cabin design solutions with regard to environmental conditions (e.g. light, colour, layout, room facilities, etc.), integrated with the consortium's technical solutions (e.g. air handling, actuators, materials, surface treatments, etc.).
Prepare technical and visual materials for presentations and project reports.
Disseminate research findings through academic and industry publications, conferences and presentations.

The role-holder will also join a thriving Department, the wider research community within the School of Arts and Humanities, and University, as we head towards REF 2028.
