At Level 4, Dstl Psychologists and Social Researchers need to use their social research/psychology skills, and knowledge of methods, analysis, and reporting, to make insightful contributions to particular research tasks and to lead on designing or assuring smaller scale research tasks or parts of larger tasks. They need to support their team's engagement with suppliers from academia / industry, and with communicating findings to clients.


At Level 5,
Dstl Senior Psychologists and Social Researchers (in addition to Level 4) draw on research and relationship skills to partner with suppliers from industry/academia who deliver our studies. In the Technical Partner role, you will assure the research that is carried out, helping to maximise its value for our clients. You will also craft and scope future research which will help the Ministry of Defence to deliver an adaptable and sustainable workforce of diverse and skilled individuals. As part of this, there may be opportunities to lead and/or deliver exciting and innovative research within inter-disciplinary teams.


At Levels 4, 5 and 6, the skills you use in your role will enable you to engage with our clients and support others to deliver robust research evidence and impact

strong research experience in designing, leading, and delivering studies (ideally but not limited to those within training and personnel research areas); competence in assuring and collaborating with industry, academic, and international partners; a focus on impact; and strong interpersonal skills.

Job description:


In this role you will:


At Dstl Level 4

  • Support the delivery of psychology, behavioural science and/or social science research against Defence challenges in the HR and work context, either through supporting and sometimes leading discrete pieces of work (where you are responsible for your own research and analysis) or assuring research delivered by industry and academia.
  • Work collaboratively as part of interdisciplinary teams (including working with partners across industry, academia and internationally) to deliver innovative and effective solutions to our customers' problems.
  • Provide support to planning and conducting psychology, behavioural science and/or social science exercises and trials across training and personnel, as well as analysing the data produced.
  • Develop your understanding of the UK Defence and Security domains.

At Dstl Level 5 (in addition to Level 4):

  • Work collaboratively across disciplines and with partners (e.g. with industry, academia and Defence organisations) to oversee the delivery of research that provides innovative and effective solutions for Defence people challenges.
  • Scope, manage, assure and review work conducted by our suppliers to ensure high quality research is delivered that aligns with clients' expectations; support and empower the supplier team to manage the delivery and exploitation of research.
