    AECOM's Sustainable Development Group are leaders in the field of Decentralised Energy, including District Heating, District Cooling, Renewables and Energy Storage.


    The team specialises in low carbon sustainable energy network design, from initial opportunity identification, business case development and design to commercialisation, procurement support, construction support and post construction monitoring.

    We have a significant number of projects across UK&I and globally within the Middle East and Europe.

    We also heavily support UK government in the delivery of a variety of schemes, including being technical advisors on both the HNIP and GHNF grant schemes.


    Our Northern team, based in Leeds, Manchester or Liverpool have a current requirement for a Principal Energy Consultant with a particular focus on project leadership and delivery.

    We are looking for someone with an excellent grasp of the UK energy market, including current government funding and workstreams, and how buildings, estates, towns and cities can be decarbonized through the introduction of energy networks.


    The role offers a great opportunity for career progression in a growing team for a candidate showing passion, technical ability and leadership skills.

    Lead the delivery of energy engineering projects including government district energy programmes, district energy feasibility and design projects.

    Interfacing, communicating, and building relationships with clients and key contacts around the business and wider industry.

    Project management and leadership of projects.

    Mentoring, managing, and guiding junior engineers/consultants.

    Be an engaged member of our dynamic energy and sustainability team.

    Bid writing and work winning.

    A good understanding of the UK energy market.

    A good understanding of developing UK government policy and funding supporting the delivery at scale of district energy networks.

    Knowledge of the Heat Networks Code of Practice, energy regulation and compliance requirements.

    Experience of delivering Energy Option Studies / Energy Audits / District Heating Feasibility Studies.

    Knowledge of building services, their design and operational requirements including controls and utilities and commissioning.

    Experience of designing and optimising energy networks.

    Commercial awareness around business case writing, EPC/ESCO type contracts, governance, and regulation.

    Experience in the role of key client contact and project lead/manager for district energy projects.

    Track record of project delivery from concept stage through to commercialisation for medium to large scale projects

    MEng / BEng/ MSc in Mechanical, Electrical Engineering or other related degree
