    Job summary

    An exciting opportunity has arisen for an AppliedPsychologist to work as a consultant on a sessional basis within ourDirectorate of Care supporting the Family Support and Wellbeing Team. Thispost-holder will provide consultation, supervision, case management and formulation,education, and training.

    The successful candidate appointed to this post will have theopportunity to further develop their knowledge and experience in psychologicaland emotional support provided in childrens hospice care; learning from amulti-professional team committed to providing exceptional specialistpalliative care.

    Experience of working with families who have children withcomplex or palliative needs would be beneficial but is not essential.

    Main duties of the job

    This post holder will support a multi-disciplinary team to provide a specialist psychological support service to children and young people and their families who are living with life limiting conditions or who are bereaved and who are experiencing complex and acute levels of psychological distress.

    Martin House has been caring for babies, children and young people with life-limiting conditions from West, North and East Yorkshire for more than 30 years. Every year we care for more than 420 families at our hospice in Boston Spa, in hospitals and in their own homes. We also support more than 150 bereaved families each year.

    Job responsibilities

    As anApplied Psychologist this postholder will provide expertise and advice to supportthe effective and appropriate provision of psychological care within our specialistpalliative Family Support team through consultation, supervision, casemanagement, formulation, education, and training.

    The postholder will:

    Providehighly specialist psychological advice, consultancy, guidance, and whereappropriate supervision to other members of the paediatric palliative caremulti-professional team.

    Offerspecialist case management to support the assessment and holistic care offamilies living with palliative care conditions and to those who are bereaved.

    Directlyand indirectly promote and support a psychologically informed andevidence-based approach to the care of children, young people and theirfamilies referred to Martin House.

    Identifylearning needs for the Family Support team based on service priorities anddeliver in-service training workshops and seminars on psychological supporttopics.

    Facilitateclinical supervision and reflective practice.

    Participatein personal appraisal and continuing professional development activities asagreed with the Head of Family Support, including training requirements inaccordance with the policies and procedures of Martin House.

    Tasks and duties

    Clinical/therapeutic

    Providespecialist psychological advice, guidance and consultation to the FamilySupport team contributing indirectly to children, young people and theirfamilys assessment, formulation, and holistic care plan.

    Develop and deliver psychological case management consultationsand formulations with the wider Family Support Team to enable the workforce toachieve high levels of skills and competence.

    Contributedirectly and indirectly to a psychological support framework of understanding,assessment and care delivery for all families referred to the Family Supportservice at Martin House.

    Undertakejoint risk assessment, formulation and case management with complexpresentations and provide advice to other professionals on psychologicalaspects of risk assessment and risk management.

    Communicatein a skilled and sensitive manner both verbally and in writing informationconcerning the assessment, formulation, and holistic care plans of familiesunder the Family Support teams care and monitor progress during therapeuticinterventions.

    Promoteand participate in multi-disciplinary team working, development and liaison.

    Demonstrateawareness of potential communication difficulties and/or culturalconsiderations and, where appropriate adapt professional practice accordingly:involving/identifying/liaising with appropriate external and internal supportservices.

    Activelypromote family experience and involvement in holistic care planning and inservice development.

    Education, training, andsupervision:

    Receiveand provide professional and clinical supervision to junior colleagues andother non-psychologist team members as appropriate and delegated by linemanager.

    Identifylearning needs for the Family Support team based on service priorities anddeliver in-service training workshops, seminars, and lectures on psychologicalsupport topics.

    Management, leadership, and service development:

    Workalongside senior clinicians within the Family Support Service to identify andimplement the continued development of a responsible and accessible service.

    Contributeto the development, evaluation and monitoring of the service operationalpolicies and procedures, through the deployment of professional skills inresearch, service evaluation and audit.

    Adviseleadership teams on aspects of service where psychological and/ororganisational matters need addressing.

    Workalongside senior clinicians in the Family Support team to manage the workloads ofjunior colleagues following policies and procedures and professionalframeworks.

    Participatein clinical governance review as agreed in respect of psychology support services.

    Professional:

    Worksas an autonomous professional within BPS and HCPC guidelines/codes of conduct guidedby principles, policies, and procedures.

    EnsureHCPC registration is maintained, complying with continuing professionaldevelopment requirements to maintain registration.

    Ensurethe development, maintenance, and dissemination of the highest standards ofprofessional practice, through active participation in CPD training and activeengagement with current research and developments in the relevant psychologicalfields and in consultation with senior clinicians.

    Maintain the highest standards of clinicalrecord keeping using electronic data entry, report writing and the responsibleexercise of professional self-governance in accordance with professional codesof practice of the BPS, HCPC and Martin House policies and procedures.

    Maintainup to date knowledge of legislation, national and local guidelines, andpolicies relevant to specialist paediatric palliative care.

    Qualifications

    Essential

  • Post-graduate doctoral level training in Clinical/Counselling or Health Psychology as accredited by the BPS.
  • Current professional registration with HCPC (you will be required to provide evidence of relevant qualifications)
  • High level knowledge of the theory and practical application of specialised psychological therapies to individuals with physical health needs.
  • Clinical experience working as a qualified psychologist within a designated service across a range of care settings and exercising full clinical responsibility for psychological care.
  • Experience of teaching, training, and supervision of staff
  • Evidence of continuous professional development
  • Knowledge of national guidance, legislation and strategies shaping paediatric palliative care services and in relation to paediatric
  • palliative care in hospices or a willingness to develop the required knowledge within an agreed timeframe.
