    Job summary

    We have a fantastic opportunity to join our stroke and neurology team here at Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust.

    The team have Occupational and Physiotherapists who work on 2 sites (A2 acute stroke/ Neuro - Pinderfields and ward 5 and 6, Neurology and stroke rehab - Dewsbury). The successful candidate would have the opportunity to work on and gain experience on both units on a semi structure rotational basis.

    The successful candidate will work alongside the exceedingly experienced senior staff, gaining skills in the assessment and treatment of patients following stroke and neurological event, in both an acute / hyper acute setting and rehab setting. This role includes complex discharge planning, cognitive rehab and upper limb rehab.

    The service works across 7 days.

    Main duties of the job

    As an Occupational Therapist on the acute stroke and neurology unit (A2) you will have the opportunity to work within the hyper acute setting, assessing patients in the initial hours following their stroke. The experienced team will support assessment skills, with a need to make decisions regarding discharge and follow on treatment.

    You will also have the opportunity to work with patients on their ongoing inpatient rehab on both A2 and ward 5 and 6, this includes use of rehab techniques and complex discharge planning.

    Clinical duties/patient contact

  • To beprofessionally and legally accountable for all aspects of own practice,including the management of individuals in your care.
  • Tounderstand and apply the Occupational Therapy process in order to effectivelyself manage a designated caseload within the Neurology service, addressingoccupational performance and skill deficits, enabling the patient in componentsof self care, productivity and leisure.
  • Toknow the professional and personal scope of own practice and make referrals toother agencies, Regional Wheelchair Services, Community OccupationalTherapy and Housing.
  • Todemonstrate specific knowledge and understanding of the key concepts ofbiological, physical, social, psychological and clinical sciences in relationto occupational performance relevant to patients.
  • Toutilise a range of standard and non-standard Occupational Therapy assessmentsand techniques in areas of occupational performance (work, leisure, personal,domestic, environment) and skill deficits relevant to patients.
  • To beable to use research, clinical reasoning and problem solving skills includingactivity analysis to identify the therapeutic benefit of client centeredinterventions and make professional judgements with individuals with diverse orcomplex needs, or multiple problems.
  • To beable to formulate specific and appropriate management plans including thesetting of time scales and engage individual and/or group participation in theOccupational Therapy treatment programme.
  • Toplan, facilitate, implement and evaluate a range of group interventionsaccording to patient need.
  • Tomonitor, analyse, evaluate and modify the Occupational Therapy process andtreatment in order to measure progress and ensure the effectiveness ofintervention.
  • To beresponsible for the assessment and prescription of minor adaptations andequipment to facilitate independence. Toprovide advice with guidance of senior staff on major adaptations.
  • Usingknowledge, carry out a variety of physical interventions that require a highlevel of physical and manual dexterity.
  • Toundertake visits and/or assessments in a variety of settings as required,including the ward, department, home or other community environment. This may include lone visits to patientshomes.
  • To beable to use flexible approaches/treatment techniques in order to treat patientswithin a broad age range.

  • Experience of working with Stroke patients / within neurology setting
  • Desirable

  • Experience of a diverse range of clinical settings.
  • Involvement in a clinical special interest group.

  • Qualified experience of working in a neurology / stroke setting
  • Qualifications

    Essential

  • Degree in Occupational Therapy or relevant OT qualification
  • Registration with HCPC
  • Desirable

  • Have completed a recognised professional practice educator course.

  • Know the key concepts of the biological, social, psychological and clinical sciences which are relevant to Stroke.
  • Ability to demonstrate/discuss Occupational Therapy process.

  • Awareness of National guidelines and legislation relating to health and social care provision.
