    The role of Medical Appraisal & Revalidation Lead is to provide overall leadership and support to the medical appraiser workforce, coordinating guidance, educational and benchmarking opportunities and performance review to all the Trust appraisers. Working closely with the Medical Appraisal Manager and Appraisers, the post holder will promote, support and facilitate the appraisal process.

    The consistent application of medical appraisal underpins the Trust's approach to clinical governance and is fundamental to the principles of lifelong learning and continuous professional development. Annual medical appraisal informs the process of medical revalidation.

    Through appraisal each consultant and SAS doctor understands what is expected of them, has clear and objective feedback

    Main duties of the job

    In addition to their own appraisal caseload, the post holder will act as a champion for medical revalidation and appraisals. They will be accountable to the Trust Responsible Officer in ensuring the quality assurance of the appraisal process by supporting the Appraisal Manager and Appraisers together with providing peer support, coaching and mentoring.

    The post holder will organise workshops to share best practice, review outcomes from appraisal in terms of learning needs and ensure appropriate training takes place. They will ensure that the in-house training of appraisers is robust and appraisers are recruited and re-trained in line with Trust policy and GMC guidelines.

    The post holder will be expected to proactively take part in NHS England events, attending three of the four networking events held each year, and should ensure that all times he/she is fully up to date with General Medical Council and NHS England requirements and our own internal Trust policy.

    To assist the Responsible Officer (RO) in ensuring Quality Assurance of the appraisal process for all non-training doctors within the Trust (with exception of MCh doctors) through supporting the Medical Appraisal Manager and Medical Appraisers, advising on best practice, and acting as "Champion" for quality appraisals across the Trust.

    Detailed job description and main responsibilities

    Key Responsibilities

  • To continually review the quality and timeliness of appraisals for non-trading medical staff within the Trust, to achieve a consistent and high standard in line with guidelines prescribed in "Good Medical Practice" and the Medical Appraisal Guide.
  • Keeping abreast of local and national developments in appraisal and revalidation.
  • To act as a "champion" for quality appraisals, liaising with Clinical Directors and lead clinicians to build support for a high-quality appraisal system
  • Providing advice and leadership to appraisers on best practice in relation to appraisals and the appraisal process
  • Carrying out for quality assurance purposes an annual review of the feedback obtained and an audit of two appraisals per appraiser.
  • Attending all the Appraiser Update meetings to provide leadership and support as required to appraisers. Collating learning needs and ensuring adequate training and workshops are in place and taking the lead on all appraiser training and delivery.
  • Monitoring performance of existing appraisers, ensuring that appraisals are conducted in line with national, regional and local guidance and regular feedback is provided.
  • Promoting and supporting the continuing professional development (CPD) of medical appraisers.
  • Responsible for:

  • To be alert for signs of concern about the performance and capability of all medical appraisers, managing appeals and difficult situations as required.
  • Assessing feedback from the appraisal process and liaising with the Responsible Officer regarding any issues
  • Provide feedback to all appraisees on an annual basis.
  • Report any issues that could impact on the quality of medical appraisal to the RO.
  • Supporting the role of the responsible officer (RO) by ensuring that the outputs of appraisal provide the required information to enable robust revalidation recommendations to be made.
  • Ensuring appraisals are carried out before the end of year deadline.
  • The post holder will be accountable to the Responsible officer, in carrying out the appraisal of a specified list of consultants and/or SAS doctors

    Carrying out the role of appraiser

  • Appraising a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 8 consultants or SAS doctors allocated to them on an annual basis.
  • Carrying out appraisals in line with the Medical Revalidation and Appraisal policy.
  • Arranging for job plan time to enable the appraisal discussions to take place.
  • Completing all appraisal training as required
  • Participating in ongoing support and development to address their own development needs in their role as an appraiser.
  • Completing the required Trust documentation following appraisal.
  • Appropriately referring clinical or other issues which become known during the appraisal process.
  • Continually reviewing and improving their practice as an appraiser
  • Participating in appraiser meetings as required
  • Participate in any other quality assurance activity in relation to appraisal as requested by the Responsible Officer.
  • Referring to the Trust's other policies and procedures for any grievance or disciplinary related issues which emerge during the appraisal discussion.
