    Job summary

    The Genomics Programme objective is to develop and implement Genomics or DNA technology in diagnostics to provide testing that enables better health outcome and reduce health inequalities in transfusion and transplantation services.This technology has the power to save and improve countless lives. That is why it is a core strategic objective for NHS Blood and Transplant. We need an exceptional leader to develop, direct and drive forward our ambitious Genomics Programme. Its all about innovating to improve blood transfusion, and the transplantation of stem cells and solid organs. You will be responsible for a range of projects. The goal? To develop and implement genomics or DNA testing in diagnostics. This will enable us to provide testing that is more accurate, faster, and comprehensive. Which will enable better health outcomes and reduce health inequalities in transfusion and transplantation services. With you on board, our people, and the patients we serve can be assured that well be a key pillar of the Genome UK government strategy: to create the worlds most advanced genomics healthcare system.

    Main duties of the job

    Your responsibilities will include:

  • Engaging with external stakeholders, like the DHSC and Office of Life Sciences and other key organisations ( Genomics Medicines services) to ensure the programme is aligned to the overall Genome UK government strategy.
  • Ensuring any relevant external environmental factors are incorporated into the planning of the programme and taking forward opportunities to collaborate to advance the strategic objectives of the Genomics Programme.
  • Working with designated stakeholders including the Chief Scientific Officer to support the development of the future scientific workforce strategy together with internal stakeholders to build NHSBT capabilities in genomics.
  • Having financial accountability for the programme, ensuring delivery works to the budget established in the business case, raising potential change controls if required and sourcing additional funding streams if relevant.
  • Providing leadership, motivation, and strategic direction to staff at all levels, whilst delivering clarity on individual objectives and measures of success, ensuring intended benefits and outcomes are realised.
  • Developing and implementing genomics technology to improve patients outcomes as part of NHSBTs strategic objectives.
  • Collaborating with a variety of stakeholders and organisations to bring in the required skills for successful delivery of the programme.
  • Designing and implementing the Genomics programme management function and reporting to key stakeholders.

    Qualifications

    Essential

  • PhD or equivalent qualification.
  • Postgraduate study in leadership and management or equivalent experience.
  • Health and Care Professional Council (HCPC) registered Clinical or Biomedical Scientist (which must be maintained).
  • Demonstrates commitment to own continued professional development (CPD).
  • Experience

    Essential

  • Significant leadership and management experience in the field of pathology laboratories.
  • Significant experience of working within a complex organisation responsible for delivering a crucial part of the business.
  • Demonstrable experience of developing and delivering strategy, new business models and change programmes.
  • Demonstrable experience of providing a service which responds to customer needs and adapting provision as required.
  • Experience of research and development in a relevant scientific field.
  • Experience of managing a large team and of performance management.
  • Knowledge and experience of financial budget management.
  • Significant leadership and management experience
  • Experience of working with Information Technology such as MS Office Suite (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
