Role Overview

This position of Director (or Associate Director) Economics is to play a leading role establishing and expanding the Savills Economics team in our Birmingham office.

This is to build on the range of work we are already doing in the city and region with colleagues in other teams.

It covers marketing and securing work and directing, managing and delivering consultancy projects.

The Savills Economics team has established a reputation as one of the leading players in the UK covering property and economic and social analysis and research.

We work on the interface between economics, property, society and infrastructure.


Team Overview
Our growing Planning Economics Team is made up of 20 Economists from Junior to Director level.
The remit of the Economics team is to lead on work in the field of property, planning and economics, covering:

  • Preparing and influencing economic, planning, property, regeneration, and infrastructure development strategy, policy and research at national, sub-regional and local levels.
  • Establishing the economic, financial and business cases for projects and programmes, including major proposals and estate/property initiatives.
  • Carrying out social and economic impact assessments, including EIA chapters, health impact assessment, equalities impact assessments and social infrastructure needs analysis and negotiations
  • Low carbon research and environmental economics.
  • Examples of our work includes:_
  • West Bromwich town centre masterplan and development advice, including funding bids and economic case
  • St Mary Le Port (Bristol) development economic and social impact and environmental net gain assessment
  • Town Investment Plan for Newark on Trent
  • Development and Infrastructure Investment Framework for Ellesmere Port Industrial Area
  • Strategic market and inward investment research for sites including J3 M54, Reading Science Park, Northern Gateway Manchester, and Brampton Cross Huntingdonshire
  • Land value uplift and capture research on a range of projects including for Transport for London and Bang Wa, Thailand
  • Preparation of Trinity East new academic and commercial quarter business plan for Trinity College Dublin
  • Electric vehicle charging market research for an institutional investor.
  • The team draws upon and works with other teams in Savills, including planning, development, research and sustainability.
Key Responsibilities of the Role
The role of the Director (or Associate Director) is to:

  • Support the head of department and directors in building up the Economics team
  • Work with the head of department and directors in preparing and updating the team's business plan
  • Lead on/work with others on marketing and bids to secure work
  • Direct and deliver projects with support from others
  • Working with the head of department and directors to ensure the profitable performance of the team in line with agreed targets
  • Develop new business opportunities in the field of economic consultancy and in the Midlands region
  • Manage other staff as appropriate with successful growth of the team.
  • Key Activities:_
  • Business planning and setting of strategy
  • Marketing
  • Draw up, present and negotiate competitive proposals
  • Liaise and cultivate good relationships with clients and fellow professionals
  • Builds relationships with other divisions with a view to create joint business development opportunities
  • Take responsibility for projects from the earliest stages through to completion
  • Undertake research and analysis
  • Develop creative and original solutions to satisfy all parties
  • Write complex reports, interpreting data and making clear and relevant recommendations
  • Prepare/make presentations at meetings
  • Communicate and negotiate effectively with clients and colleagues
  • Effective financial management of projects to ensure profitable delivery
  • Team building
  • Management of junior staff (with successful growth of the team)
  • Maintain an awareness of market conditions and the impact of government policies
  • Keep informed about documents relating to relevant policy and practice
  • Attends external events to create local contacts and identify business opportunities.

  • Numerical and analytic skills, preferably including modelling expertise (usual in Excel) and ability to carry out property appraisals
  • Expertise in successfully managing projects and teams to budget and programme (essential).
  • Consultancy experience (strongly desirable)
  • A degree in town planning, geography, property surve
