    Job summary

    An excitingopportunity has arisen at the hospice for a research lead and data manager,this role will be split between time with the specialist team (SPACE) and thewider hospice teams. Research is at the core of the services that we offer, andthe successful applicant will work with the Research Governance group tocontinue to develop our research programme and with the clinical teams onservice development and data management projects.

    Shooting Star Childrens Hospicesprovides specialist care and support to families who have a baby, child oryoung person with a life-limiting condition, or who have been bereaved. RatedOutstanding by the Care Quality Commission, we support families acrossSurrey, north-west London and south-west London from diagnosis to end of lifeand throughout bereavement with a range of nursing, practical, emotional andmedical care.

    Our specialist care and support isfree of charge to families and available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Itincludes specialist nursing in the community, symptom management, overnightrespite stays, end-of-life care, specialist bereavement care and acomprehensive range of therapies, groups and clinics for the whole family.

    At the heart of what we do are ourdedicated staff; their exceptional commitment and professionalism means everyfamily has the opportunity to make every moment count .

    It costs £10 million a year to run ShootingStar Childrens Hospices. Just 30% of our funding comes from the government, sowe rely on our supporters generosity to keep the service running. We employ175 members of staff, including 98 nursing and medical staff, and support around700 families.

    The Hospice Care Team

    An exciting opportunity has arisen at the hospice for aresearch fellow to work with the specialist palliative care team and widerhospice teams at Shooting Star Childrens Hospices (SSCH). Research is at thecore of the services that we offer, and the successful applicant will berequired to work with the Research Governance group to continue to develop ourresearch programme, strategy and with the clinical teams service developmentand data management projects. This role is able to be offered as a hybridworking pattern with 3 days in the hospice and 2 days remote working.

    Main duties and responsibilities

    Research :

    To beresponsible for the day-to-day coordination and administration of researchprojects

    Toparticipate in the design and preparation of research studies/trials, researchethic committee submissions, patient information sheets and other documentationensuring that these are reviewed and updated as required.

    To carryout and assist in data collection (including qualitative interviewingtechniques) for research projects with CYP and/or their families.

    Todesign and maintain databases (, using MACRO) and to use specialiststatistical packages as appropriate (, SPSS) for the analysis of researchdata in liaison and consultation with the research group.

    Toprepare reports and presentations for review meetings and progress of researchprojects.

    Tocomply with research study protocols, standard operational procedures andHospice / Trust policies related to data security, confidentiality and healthand safety.

    Beinvolved with the financial processes associated with coordinating researchstudies and grant applications.

    Topresent research findings in the form of published papers, reports,presentations, or summaries internally, nationally and internationally.

    Act as aresource to staff and contribute to their professional and educationaldevelopment Act as expert resource for staff and researchers preparingsubmissions for regulatory approval.

    Tosupport projects for the specialist service (3 days) and the wider hospice (2days).

    Tosupport the development and compliance of research governance infrastructure inthe organisation.

    Toensure the hospice can be a collaborative partner in national research projectsand engage meaningfully with the national paediatric palliative care researchagenda.

    Reportany poor research processes that compromise patient safety and study protocols.

    Toensure that all research is documented, and that all relevant documentation iscompleted accurately and within agreed timescales using Shooting StarChildrens Hospices approved documentation in line with NMC, CQC and ShootingStar Childrens Hospice standards.

    To leadand take decisions on requests from externals teams for Shooting Star toparticipate within their research in consultation with the Research GovernanceGroup.

    Service development:

    Toparticipate in the parent involvement/research advisory group.

    Toundertake presentations and teaching with multi-disciplinary staff to a varietyof audiences as required and lead journal club.

    Toassist in the design and implementation of service development projects aspertinent to the role, following policies

    Toundertake project management, including audit and service evaluation, withcolleagues within the care teams to help develop and improve services topatients and their families.

    Toundertake evidence-based literature searches and reviews to assist the Careteams in implementing evidence-based practice.

    To beactive in the research strategy, plan and lead stakeholder events.

    Data management support for SPACE team:

    Tocollect, analyse and present data for SPACE team (specialist paediatricpalliative care) which is based at SSCH.

    To usecomputer-based applications excel, PowerPoint for entry, analysis andpresentation of data.

    Tocreate quarterly reports of service data and present to relevant teams forservice monitoring and development and to the SSCH clinical governance group

    Other :

    Tomaintain up to date knowledge of legislation, national and local policies, andissues in relation to the role.

    Takingpart in regular appraisal and maintaining an active engagement with currentdevelopments in the field of paediatric palliative care and relateddisciplines.

    Toundertake relevant training on advanced communication skills and datacollection methods as required.

    To planand organise own workload, including research, group, and individual work.

    Contributeto monitoring of consent procedures.

    Participatein local, regional, and national forums and networks related to clinicalresearch and the nurses role.
