    We have an incredible opportunity here at Phoenix Group as a Structuring Specialist to join our Asset Liability Management Team, within the Asset Management function.

    The role

    The role is part of a dedicated team in Phoenix Asset Management focussed on investment management and Asset Liability Management (ALM) for Phoenix Life Company business.

    The role holder will monitor and manage the ALM position of a range of funds, focussing on structuring of hedging trades and managing the ALM impact of credit trading activities. A particular focus will be on the Matching Adjustment funds, but structuring activities will cross with the Surplus fund and With-Profit funds.

    The role holder will interact very closely with a broad range of stakeholders, including portfolio management and ALM teams in the Asset Management function, Actuarial, Finance, Treasury and Risk teams within Phoenix.

    Key responsibilities

  • Trade Structuring – lead the development of detailed trade proposals to implement asset portfolio rebalancing, hedging and Strategic Asset Allocation management actions.
  • What-if-Modelling/Analysis – perform detailed pro forma analyses of trade proposals to assess impact on MA tests, ALM metrics, liquidity requirements, SAA and value creation targets.
  • Portfolio Optimisation – actively seek opportunities to optimise portfolios.
  • Hedging Proposals – monitor and manage MA portfolio compliance with applicable matching tests, as well as similar metrics in other LifeCo funds. Develop and obtain approval of fund rebalancing proposals or derivative overlays as required to maintain ALM portfolio compliance
  • Asset Eligibility Screening – support and guide process to screen assets for eligibility to be included in MA portfolios. Act as subject matter expert on MA eligibility features supporting the sourcing of new assets to be included in MA funds, in particular private debt assets.
  • Trade Approval – prepare approval requests of MA trade proposals and present these to senior management and governance committees
  • Trade Instruction/Execution – support the Portfolio Implementation team with the execution and instruction of trades in MA funds, providing inputs for checklists and instruction templates
  • Management Information Reporting – contribute to the production of management information packs and compliance reports with analysis and subject matter expertise
  • Portfolio Analytics – support scenario and sensitivity analyses for MA portfolios with quantitative modelling using a range of in house and third-party analytics tools
  • Modelling and Tool Development – contribute to the development and testing of models, tools and methodologies used for what-if-analysis and portfolio optimisation working in close collaboration with quants and enterprise architects.
  • Customer – bearing in mind implication of actions on policyholders
  • ESG – bearing in mind the ESG impact of portfolio actions
  • What we're looking for

    Knowledge

  • Asset Classes – good understanding of the main features and differences in the main asset classes / investment products Phoenix is currently invested in and investment products (cash, UK government bonds, corporate bonds, private debt, ERM, derivatives, equity markets)
  • Investment Process – good understanding of the main steps in the end to end process from trade structuring to execution and the internal and external stakeholders in the process.
  • Governance and Regulation – experience with investment governance processes and awareness of applicable laws, regulations . Existing experience in managing Matching Adjustment funds is of advantage.
  • Experience

    Insurance Investment Experience – for example at an insurance company, a bank or consulting company

    Qualifications

    Equivalent toInvestment Actuary (part-qualified or recently qualified) or Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA Level 1 or above)
