Role Purpose

  • To be part of a dedicated team of nurses with the knowledge, skills and ability to care for patients in the oncology and haematology setting.
  • To administer chemotherapy medications as prescribed by a Consultant Oncologist and haematologist. To monitor and report the effects of the chemotherapy on the patient.
  • Accountable for ensuring that you provide the highest standard of care

Core Responsibilities and Key Accountabilities

  • Coordinate, plan, implement and evaluate the care of individual patients.
  • To work in close liaison with multidisciplinary teams and act as a resource in chemotherapy both within the Hospital and also to patients and families.
  • To act as the patients advocate, communicate effectively with patients and families to assess needs and provide support, information, education, advice and counselling when necessary and under the guidance of the Oncologist or haematologist.
  • Take part in a 24 hour on call oncology service
  • To ensure that standards of patient care are consistently maintained at all times in accordance with agreed operational policies and as a skilled practitioner.
  • To promote and safeguard the wellbeing and interests of all patients, employees and visitors.
  • Provide support and guidance for junior and unqualified members of staff.
  • Participate in the setting and maintenance of Clinical Standards and Clinical Audit
  • Conduct yourself professionally within the standard and framework provided by the NMC Code of professional Conduct.
  • Maintain active registration with the NMC and own clinical and professional development in nursing. Attend relevant study sessions in accordance with NMC and PREP guidelines.
  • To work within NICE guidelines, CQC standards and the client's Health Group policy, especially including chemotherapy and cytotoxic practice and procedure.
  • To assist in development and maintenance of all clinical standards and participate in national, corporate and local audits and contribute towards a high satisfaction and return rate of patient surveys.
  • Complete initial assessment of oncology and haematology patients from consulting rooms with an appointment provided for further information and delivery of individual treatment plan.
  • Ensure preauthorisation for treatment via medical insurance company is present before start of treatment plans
  • Meet with Consultant Oncologists and Haematologist on a regular basis to review current caseload
  • Liaise with Pharmacy Manager on an ongoing basis to plan the provision of chemotherapy drugs in accordance with individual patient treatment plans.
  • Obtain blood results for caseload of patients prior to the commencement of each cycle of chemotherapy and respond according to results.
  • To maintain professional credibility and attend relevant courses
  • Maintain safe custody, registration and administration of drugs.
  • Ensure accurate records of patient care and progress maintained at all times, ensuring risk assessments are completed and repeated
  • Be aware of the key principles of the mental capacity act and the escalation plan for issues associated with safeguarding
  • To ensure compliance to all local and corporate policies and procedures. Ensure compliance with infection prevention and control policy and procedure, escalating any concerns to your line manager.
  • Advise on issues within your scope of expertise.
  • Be responsible and accountable for encompassing a range of activities, which develop and encourage good practice to prevent harmful and or adverse events happening to patients' visitors and or staff.
  • Ensure safe handling and maintenance of equipment.
  • Contribute towards costeffective utilisation of hospital resources.
  • Resolve patient / relative concerns where possible, escalate to head of department and / or senior manager if support required

Key Performance Indicators:


  • Manage individual patient care to an optimum during span of duty and ensure safe and effective handover of care to another healthcare professional, following the standard format for patient handover of care for senior nursing colleagues and peers
  • Feedback from service users patients, Oncologists, Haematologist, Senior nursing colleagues and peers
  • Ability to meet objectives of appraisals
  • Satisfactory audit and clinical practice and documentation

Knowledge / Skills / Qualifications:


  • Registered Nurse Level 1 / Diploma / BSc in Nursing Or Registered Nurse Level 2 Relevant Competencies for the role.
  • Chemotherapy administration qualification
  • Mentorship qualification desirable
  • Currently updated PREP profile
  • Understanding of the NMC Code of Professional Conduct
  • Previous experience working within the acute healthcare sector
  • Good communication and organisational skills
  • Knowledge of quality assurance tools
