St Beuno's is one of the leading residential retreat centres in the UK, and indeed receives many visitors from around the world.

Working as part of the Jesuits in Britain we run around 160 events for 2000 visitors per year.

At our 60 bedroom site we aim to offer retreats and the space for reflection and prayer and we also aim to be known for high quality training and scholarship.

Operating in a magnificent Grade 2* listed building overlooking the Clwydian Hills, we want St Beuno's to be a good place to work where people feel appreciated and respected, and where people have the opportunity to grow and change.


To help us to continue to flourish we are now looking for an experienced Finance Officer to manage and maintain the financial records for the centre.

Hours: 32 hours per week (days and timings can be flexible)

Salary Range:
£30,000 - £33,000 pro rata

Start Date:
Early April if possible


Key responsibilities

  • To record all income and ensure prompt payment of invoices to suppliers. To prepare an annual budget and at least 2 revised forecasts during the course of the year
  • To monitor income and expenditure against the agreed budget and to adequately explain any major differences
  • To produce 6 monthly and 12 monthly accounts in cooperation with the Treasurer's department
  • To prepare a cash flow statement and a detailed cash forecast (3/12 months).
  • To prepare and present monthly reports for management committee.
  • To deal with auditors' queries.
  • Wages: To prepare payroll, arrange for prompt approval and payment, submit details to HMRC and pay all liabilities, act as pension administrator and deal with all queries, as required
  • To assist with other administrative and houserelated tasks when required. Any other duties associated with the role

Person Specification

  • Good working knowledge of financial systems and production of accounts (monthly and end of year) on an accruals basis
  • Knowledge of office procedures and practice
  • Knowledge and experience of using ICT including Microsoft packages such as Excel, Word and Outlook
  • Knowledge of payroll processes and related HMRC regulations
  • Proven experience of recording accounting transactions and maintaining accounting records, including providing analyses and performing various reconciliations
  • Proven experience of preparing accounts on an accruals basis
  • Experience of preparing cashflow forecasts
  • Use of ICT including Excel
  • Use of QuickBooks
  • Experience of payroll systems
  • Experience of preparing budget and revised income and expenditure forecasts
  • Experience of administering budgets
  • Preparation of monthly management accounts
  • Experience of working in a busy and demanding environment
  • Financial and management reporting either in charitable sector or commercially
  • Good general education with GCSEs or equivalent in English & maths
  • Accounting qualification e.g. AAT, or studying towards such a qualification, or qualified by experience
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to remain calm and focussed under pressure
  • Ability to undertake own workload unsupervised with high levels of accuracy
  • High standards of professionalism and confidentiality
  • Excellent communication / interpersonal skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to communicate financial information in an appropriate manner for nonfinancial people
  • Sympathetic to the mission of the Church and with the aims, vision and values of St Beuno's
