An exciting opportunity has arisen for a part time Inpatient Consultant role for the neuropsychiatry/ FND pathway at the Lishman Unit, the specialist neuropsychiatry inpatient unit at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.
This role will be 5 sessions working alongside the existing consultant on the unit who will retain primary responsibility for patients on the brain injury pathway.
There will be opportunities for joint working across the pathway, and potential future developments may extend this.
The service has two pathways in the unit for adults aged 18 or over: a Level 1c Neurorehabilitation Unit for Acquired Brain Injury; and neuropsychiatry inpatients, predominantly patients with functional neurological disorder.
The service accepts tertiary level patients with neuropsychiatric conditions with complex cognitive, behavioural or psychiatric problems beyond the scope of their local and district rehabilitation teams, or community psychiatric services.
The Lishman unit consultant has a key role in providing clinical leadership with senior decision making on a daily basis to contribute towards the MDT management of individual patients' rehabilitation needs.
The ward is currently a 15 bedded unit, typically with eight beds for the brain injury pathway, and seven beds for the neuropsychiatry pathway.
The consultant provides clinical supervision for a core trainee, and is encouraged to provide educational supervision to a small number of trainees across the trust.
The post holder would be expected to engage on a regional (London) and national level with regard to the development of neurorehabilitation services throughout the country.
SLAM Neuropsychiatry
Neuropsychiatry services at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust consist of an inpatient unit (the Lishman Unit - temporarily based at the Bethlem); outpatient services including a day programme for FND; and neuropsychiatry liaison service to Kings College Hospital (KCH) and St.
- There are excellent opportunities for CPD within the neuropsychiatry service, including a regular programme of external speakers (twice monthly), and a monthly case presentation. The post holder would be encouraged to attend and present at these sessions. There is also the quarterly Trust wide CPD afternoon with high profile key speakers including from the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience and King's Health Partners.

Provide clinical leadership and decision making for the patients on neuropsychiatry/ FND pathway at the Lishman Unit. This will be delivered through weekly ward rounds, MDT reviews, and ward review of patients.
Complete assessments for new patients alongside other senior members of the MDT both on the ward setting and as outreach assessments.
To manage, appraise and give professional supervision to junior medical staff as agreed between consultant colleagues and the Medical Director and in accordance with the Trust's personnel policies and procedures.
To communicate clearly and effectively with staff of all major disciplines concerned with the provision of mental health care.
To participate in service and business planning activity for the locality and, as appropriate, for the whole mental health service.
To attend and participate in the academic programme of the Trust, including lectures and seminars as part of the internal CPD programme.
To maintain professional registration with the General Medical Council, Mental Health Act Section 12(2) approval including approved clinician status, and to abide by professional codes of conduct.
