    The Company

    A multi-award winning integrated drug discovery CRO that has been setting the highest standards in drug discovery since 2001. They work in partnership with clients from a variety of sectors including academic, pharmaceutical, biotechnology and patient foundation organisations around the world. Their vision is to be the pre-eminent partner for innovative drug discovery services that improve the quality of life for people living with disease.

    Having recently moved into state of the art headquarters the multidisciplinary team of scientists works closely with partners to generate innovative ideas, and to deliver high-quality results and outputs, for example, crystallography-grade proteins and novel compounds that meet the desired target product profile.

    Your Role

    Team Leader within the Protein Science group in our Biology Department.

    This is an outstanding opportunity for a talented and passionate protein scientist to have an influential role in drug discovery projects at a leading integrated medicines research CRO in Pampisford on the outskirts of Cambridge, UK. This role will provide a blend of lab work, project management, client interaction and line management of individual team members.

    You will join a rapidly growing and talented team of specialist research scientists. The Biology Department has leading capabilities in recombinant protein production and quality control, structural biology including X-ray crystallography and cryo-EM, biophysics, enzymology, receptor pharmacology, in vitroADME, and cellular pharmacology. We apply our expertise to different phases of early drug discovery, from hit ID through to candidate selection for a variety of different modalities, such as small-molecules, fragments, targeted protein degraders, RNA/DNA binders, antibodies and aptamers.

    You will have excellent problem solving skills and regularly be able to present data to key stakeholders, both internally and externally, through oral presentations and written reports, with a talent for building trust and rapport with client project team members.

    On a day to day basis you would be expected to:

    • Line manage a group of direct and indirect reports, providing leadership and direction in technical and personal development;
    • Plan and implement experimental protein production projects for structural or biophysical analysis;
    • Develop and advise on the development, troubleshooting, optimisation and interpretation of recombinant protein expression studies; protein purification procedures using AKTA systems and protein QC data using a range of techniques;
    • Provide high quality data and reports to experts and non-experts of the field;
    • Manage client projects and help attract new client projects;
    • Guide, train and mentor direct reports;
    • Identify and drive improvements and innovations in capabilities;
    • Achieve personal scientific visibility through project contributions and client presentations, and external scientific visibility through conference presentations;
    • Ensure that all duties are performed in accordance with organisational standards, policies and procedures.

    Candidate Requirements

    • Educated to PhD level (or BSc/MSc) with relevant experience in protein production, line and project management in an industrial drug discovery environment.
    • Considerable background in drug discovery in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry
    • Experience in project leadership
    • Well-developed communication and presentation skills (verbal and written English)
    • A sound knowledge of molecular biology and protein expression of proteins at litre scale in different expression systems (bacterial, insect or mammalian expression)
    • Proven experience of optimisation of protein expression and purification including affinity, ion exchange and size exclusion chromatography using AKTA systems with the aim of producing multi mg protein for structural analysis or biophysical screening studies
    • Deep understanding in a broad range of protein QC technologies
    • Must be comfortable to work independently and as part of a team and able to handle working on multiple projects while maintaining high quality throughput. Proactive in addressing new challenges and providing solutions

    Experience in the following would be considered highly desirable but not essential:

    • Experience with membrane protein production such as GPCRs, Ion channels, SLCs using detergents or amphipols, SMAlps or nanodiscs
    • Structural analysis of membrane proteins by CryoEM or X-ray crystallography
    • Experience with recombinant antibody production
    • Proven experience in line management
    • Ability to plan resource requirements
    • Ability to plan equipment and recruitment needs in a growing team

    Benefits

    • An excellent pension scheme with 5% individual contribution with a 10% contribution
    • Annual leave of 25 days plus bank holidays and a complimentary day off for your birthday
    • A private medical insurance scheme for you with substantial discounted benefits for your family
    • Four times salary group life cover scheme
