    We now have three exciting opportunities for an ambitious Construction Project Manager to join our team based at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory.

    Working with the Senior Construction Project Manager, the role is responsible for leading the delivery of complex construction and refurbishment projects.

    The post holder runs the interface between our clients (scientific users) and internal/external design teams, appointed consultants and contractors. You will be the face of the client to consultants and contractors.

    The posts holder will be expected to lead schemes typically in the region of £250k – £10m.

    The nature of STFC's science dictates that most projects are likely to be complex and unique and usually delivered at pace and require robust decision making and leadership from the project manager.


    The Construction PM will be the Estates lead and make key project decisions with overall responsibility for the delivery of building projects.

    Specific building and Engineering knowledge is required.

    This includes mechanical, electrical, civil, structural, fire engineering and all statutory requirements, including British standards, Town and Country Planning, Building Regulations.

    This is a great opportunity for a hardworking and driven construction professional who will be responsible for:


    • Full ownership and overall responsibility for the successful co-ordination, planning, execution, monitoring, control, and closure of construction projects.
    • Support the preparation of the project business cases, including costs estimates, programme and feasibility studies.
    • Lead the Projects, pro-actively supervising and supporting the performance of consultants and contractors.
    • Take ownership for the management of the project including design and specification development, procurement, programme, construction, gateway approvals, risk and financial status.
    • The PM team implement and administer the NEC4 contract for both Professional Services, our Term Service Contract and Engineering and Construction Contracts.
    • Role may require travel to other STFC sites.
    *Essential Shortlisting Criteria
    • Must hold relevant professional qualification related to the construction industry and/or membership of a relevant professional body (RICS, ICE, CIOB, RIBA, etc.)
    • Significant experience of managing and delivering high value, highly complex construction projects.
    • Experience working through all RIBA stages with end user Clients to develop their detailed requirements and specifications.
    • Excellent knowledge and significant experience in implementing project/programme management, value engineering, risk management, contract management and soft landings.
    • Experience of managing the design and development of significant new build projects or major refurbishments, preferably on scientific facilities. Experience of working with central and local government and other statutory authorities to gain approvals such as Town Planning, Building Control, HSE etc.
    • A knowledge of the different forms of construction contracts, the pros and cons associated with their use and how these perform in use. Ideally with NEC4 contract management experience, from a Consultancy or Client organisation background.
