Job Purpose

As an integral member of both the School's Leadership Team and the College Professional Services Leadership Team, the post holder will play a lead role in the successful implementation and delivery of the College and School's strategy, policies, and objectives, in order to fully achieve key University/College/School goals and deliver improvements evidenced by internal and external measures.

Accountable to the Director of College Professional Services the role holder has day-to-day responsibilities to support the Head of School.

In addition to the general leadership contributions above, the post is responsible for all professional support services to the School including learning and teaching, research, and operational.

This currently includes a blend of line management responsibility, direct and indirect, across professional/administrative, technical and operational staff within the School and business partnering with College functions.

This will involve setting and monitoring appropriate operating models and service standards, across a wide range of activities, including ensuring appropriate integration with wider College and University services.


Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work in partnership with the Head of School, as a member of the School Leadership Team, to implement and deliver the School strategy in line with the College and University's strategic objectives, KPIs and targets, including playing a key role in coordinating and influencing the strategic planning process.
  • Manage and develop the professional/administrative, operational, and technical support functions and structures in the School to secure effective delivery of the School's priorities and ensure KPI target delivery.
  • In conjunction with the Head of School and School Leadership Team, partner with College and University Professional Services Teams to ensure School compliance with, and understanding of, relevant legislation, policies, processes, and requirements. This will include partnering with College Finance to manage and implement the School's financial strategy and operational delivery, the College People and OD team on both strategic and operational HR matters, the College Student Services team on student support and experience, and the College Research Support team for academic research and REF.
  • Engage the School Leadership Team, and act with their delegated authority as agreed, to improve School business and league table performance. Such efforts will include organising and analysing relevant external information from relevant authorities and benchmarking sources.
  • Lead horizon scanning for the School to future proof performance and sustainability within an increasingly competitive HE environment.
  • Develop, with Head of School and senior academic colleagues, external engagement opportunities including partnerships and networks to enhance reputation at local, national, and international levels; working with relevant College business partners.
  • Work collaboratively across College Services Leadership Team and, where relevant, broader University departments, to plan and deliver coherent and efficient ways of working across Professional Services. Perform a leading role in effecting change, driving measurable improvement in key performance areas and resource planning to deliver the key strategic objectives of the School/College and University.
  • In partnership with senior academic colleagues develop a robust framework to support compliance with relevant accreditation, including Athena SWAN, regulatory requirements, and quality assurance processes.
  • Responsible for the implementation of the academic workload model to support efficient and effective resourcing of research and teaching activity streams; working in partnership with Head of School and senior academic colleagues to maximise academic resource and deliver improvement in KPI and league table performance.
  • Responsible for the operational delivery and provision of strategic support for the School/College Internationalisation strategy, ensuring services and resources are aligned to School/College/University ambitions.
  • Provide executive support for Head of School across various areas including support of budgetary control framework, risk register management, etc.
  • As the School professional services lead play a leading role as a member of the School Leadership team as well as the College professional services leadership team.
  • Undertake other duties as are assigned by the College Director of Professional Services and Head of School.
